HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION<br />

Part <strong>of</strong> the post-WW2 industry boom, the Malcolm & Hicks Boat Works built and repaired boats<br />

for fi shing, beachcombing and pleasure. Under various owners the site has been in active use as a<br />

marine repair shop into the fi rst years <strong>of</strong> the 21 st Century.<br />

Originally known as the Malcolm & Hicks Boat Works, within a year or two the property was soon<br />

known as “Charlie Malcolm Boat Works.” Charlie “Chick” Malcolm was a trained cabinetmaker<br />

and, following the dissolution <strong>of</strong> his partnership with Ed Hicks, mostly worked alone building<br />

custom boats for fi shing and beachcombing.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> their fi rst contracts was to build Ray Fletcher’s beachcombing vessel, “Sea Mist,” designed<br />

to be powerful enough to remove logs from beaches at low tide.<br />
