BARBECUED GROUND BEEF<br />

1 lb. ground beef shoulder<br />

1 cup chopped <strong>on</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

1 cup chopped green pepper<br />

1 tablespo<strong>on</strong> shortening<br />

1 teaspo<strong>on</strong> salt<br />

1 teaspo<strong>on</strong> chili powder<br />

1 teaspo<strong>on</strong> sugar<br />

1 tablespo<strong>on</strong> prepared mustard<br />

1 cup tomato sauce or catsup<br />

Brown meat in melted shortening,<br />

add all o<strong>the</strong>r ingredients and simmer<br />

in covered skillet for 35 minutes.<br />

Serve <strong>on</strong> toast or buns.<br />

FRYING PAN CANDY<br />

1 cup your favorite ready-to-eat<br />

cereal<br />

'/a cup raisins, coc<strong>on</strong>ut or nuts<br />

6 ounces chocolate chips<br />

Place nuts, coc<strong>on</strong>ut or raisins and<br />

cereal in warm frying pan. When<br />

pan is hot, remove from fire and stir<br />

in chocolate. When chocolate is<br />

melted, spo<strong>on</strong> mixture <strong>on</strong>to wax paper<br />

or tin plate. Let stand until hard.<br />

Barbara, Calif., whose work appears <strong>on</strong><br />

this m<strong>on</strong>th's fr<strong>on</strong>t cover, recently w<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Richfield Oil Corporati<strong>on</strong>'s yearl<strong>on</strong>g<br />

c<strong>on</strong>test for <strong>the</strong> best Western wildflower<br />

photo. His winning entry, worth $750, was<br />

a picture <strong>of</strong> a spread <strong>of</strong> poppies in Ariz<strong>on</strong>a.<br />

"Touring Mexico for Minerals" was written<br />

by a woman who knows her rocks, for<br />

Mary S. Shaub is a graduate in geology<br />

from Smith College, and has published many<br />

articles in leading mineralogy journals. But,<br />

mineralogy is not <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly field <strong>of</strong> natural<br />

history with which <strong>the</strong> Shaubs are interested.<br />

At <strong>the</strong>ir home in Northampt<strong>on</strong>, Massachusetts,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y operate <strong>the</strong> Shaub Ornithological<br />

Research Stati<strong>on</strong> where <strong>the</strong>y have banded<br />

8000 birds. The Shaubs also publish <strong>the</strong><br />

Evening Grosbeak Survey News, and in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

"spare time" are active members <strong>of</strong> local<br />

camera, Nature and mineral clubs.<br />

James W. Abarr ("Fort Ojo California")<br />

is a native <strong>of</strong> Nebraska, but says "I'll never<br />

be anything but a <strong>Southwest</strong>erner." He<br />

lived in California for 10 years where he<br />

graduated from San Diego State College in<br />

1951 with a degree in journalism. At present<br />

he is <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> editorial staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Albuquerque<br />

Journal. "I have two loves," he<br />

said, "my family (wife, s<strong>on</strong> and daughter)<br />

and New Mexico, whose colorful history<br />

never ceases to fascinate me."<br />

"A King Snake and Two Rattlers" was<br />

written by Roy M. Youngman <strong>of</strong> Sunland,<br />

California. He has had wide experience as<br />

a teacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biological and social sciences—from<br />

grade school, high school and<br />

Army school to <strong>the</strong> university level. More<br />

recently, Dr. Youngman has been doing<br />

research work <strong>on</strong> primitive man for <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Southwest</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> Archeological<br />

Survey Associati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
