The SuperValu TidyTowns competition
brings out the best in communities
and people across the length and
breadth of the country. Each year
thousands of committed volunteers
get involved to make their community
a better place to live.
SuPErVALu TidyTOwNS HErOES
In 2012 we launched the SuperValu
TidyTowns competition by asking for
30,000 volunteers to get their hands dirty.
We also asked you to nominate your
local SuperValu TidyTowns Hero. We were
looking for your help to recognise the hard
work, dedication and commitment of those
individuals who are the backbone of your

SuPErVALu TidyTOwNS HErOES
community and this great competition.
Without the dedication of these individuals
this competition could not survive and
grow in strength year after year.
We received hundreds of entries to this
section of the competition. In 2012 we
will recognise the first thirteen of these
SuperValu TidyTowns Heroes, but would
like to acknowledge and thank the
30,000 volunteers who make this great
competition what it is and who continue to
build vibrant local communities.
comprehensive and straight off tells the adjudicator of
your commitment to doing well in this competition.
You have maintained a detailed record of your work
since your last adjudication and the list of projects
completed is comprehensive. The size of your
committee, 26 members, is very impressive and
it is encouraging to read that you enjoy excellent
voluntary cooperation from the wider community.
Indeed this was evident during our adjudication visit.
We like that you identify the skills and expertise of
your volunteers each year and assign tasks accordingly
and we were interested to read the various skills that
your committee and volunteers have identified and
honed. You are accomplished at collaborating and
working with various organisations/agencies, both
locally and nationally, and this has been demonstrated
by your ability to source funding and support for your
work programmes. You are very active all year round
and recognise the huge level of action required in
each category to compete at such a high level in the
competition. You are very organised and competent
at communicating with the local community and
you do so by a large variety of mediums. We visited
your website which is very informative and up-todate
and particularly liked your tagline ‘Creating a
Sustainable Village Community.’ As a first time visitor
to Abbeyshrule the commitment you show to the
presentation of your village is evident at every turn.
This adjudicator feels that you have drawn on the great
ethos of voluntary endeavour for this competition
and the widespread community spirit and used it
as a platform to initiate real change at a local level.
We are very impressed. To progress that extra bit
have you considered establishing a Junior TidyTowns
Committee?
The Built Environment:
This year you have had the majority of your existing
timber lighting poles replaced by decorative black
lighting standards complete with energy efficient
bulbs, which further enhance the village core. The
roof of the Waterways building has been repaired
and we noted that you had enhanced three windows
of the old furniture factory with old reproduction
photographs relevant to the area. The adjudicator
thought that the wall at the village pump would benefit
from painting but surprisingly when we were finishing
up our adjudication visit, three people were setting
up to begin painting here! You have painted the
uninhabited house at the aqueduct with the assistance
of Waterways Ireland. Roney’s Inn was being painted
during our visit; the new colour choice tones in well
with the surrounding buildings in this vicinity and
enhances the appearance of the property immensely.
As always, the Rustic Inn was well presented. We
noted that a small section near the corner at Scally’s
Bridge was in need of repair. We like your plans for
an integrated playground at the canal harbour and
are pleased that you have begun working on the
accessibility issue to the Abbey.
Landscaping:
In general terms the landscaping is to a very high
standard throughout and it is no surprise to learn
that you are also participating in the Entente Florale
Competition this year. The adjudicator was very
impressed with the Whitworth Aqueduct on the Royal
Canal and the area around here is well landscaped.
Your tree tagging is quite unusual! We wondered if
you use this as a management tool and record details
such as, when your trees were planted, species
etc. The Green area across from the Rustic Inn is a
relaxing haven. We noted that work is ongoing beside
the village pump; a small area was cordoned off
during our visit. We were unaware as to what is being
undertaken in this area as this was not mentioned in
your application.
21

22
wildlife and Natural Amenities:
We note that one of your committee members has
recently attended a course given by the Irish Wildlife
Trust on how to care for rivers and streams – how will
you disseminate this information to the community?
We know that you have a Biodiversity Action Plan and
also have the ‘Scott Cawley Biodiversity Study’ but
you did not include these in your submission. Please
bear in mind that relevant supporting documents
should be included each year as the adjudicator
does not have sight of what you provided the
previous year. Congratulations on the success of
your essay competition and we liked how you use
the community notice board to display the winners
of your competitions. You have a number of good
interpretative signs in and around the village. Your
three walking trails are noted all which incorporate
walking along the Grand Canal, the River Inny and the
local peat bogs and your accompanying Abbeyshrule
Walkways brochure is concise yet informative. We
admired the ruins of the mill at Clynan Bridge while on
the ‘Walkway 2’ and were interested to read in your
‘Wildlife in Abbeyshrule’ brochure that it supports a
number of bat species. We saw the wildflower seeds
sown at the wall in the vicinity of the Bring Banks. Pay
good attention to these to ensure they flourish.
Litter Control:
We were surprised to read and then see at first hand
that you have removed litter bins from the village.
Your confidence in your litter monitoring and control
measures is great to have taken this bold move. A
review of assessing the impact of removing the bins
would be interesting for next year. On our adjudication
visit we did not see any signs of litter thus - so far so
good! The bring banks were well presented and very
clean.
Tidiness:
Thank you for acting upon many, if not all, of the
comments raised last year. This adjudicator thought
that your attention to detail this year is to be
commended. The upgraded works by Airtricty and ESB
networks in removing overhead cables in the village
core is more aesthetically pleasing. Weeding at the
base of walls and along the footpaths is excellent. We
irELANd’S TidiEST TOwN
pondered your comment regarding engaging with the
local farming community to be user friendly when
transporting silage, turf and hay through the village and
approach roads during the harvest season. We would
be interested to know what you meant by this. This
adjudicator feels that your ability to retain the sense
of a traditional countryside village is one of your key
strengths.
waste Minimisation:
You have been extremely busy this year under this
work category with various worthwhile projects. We
visited your community composter near the entrance
to Corncrake Meadow, perhaps re-run a section in your
Newsletter on the correct things that can go into this
composter to refresh the minds of those using it as we
noted quite large cuttings from fir trees which will not
breakdown well. We also noted from your Newsletter
that you ran a successful ‘Bring and Take’ reuse event.
You are to be commended for working with the
Environmental Awareness Officer in Longford County
Council in relation to your waste minimisation project
this year. You successfully enlisted six different families
to participate in this worthwhile project where advice
was given specifically in relation to each household on
waste reduction and energy saving measures. We note
that the second phase of this project involves further
energy assessments and that the Environmental
Awareness Officer will also monitor and report on the
findings. This really is a truly excellent project which
addresses the ethos of this category very well. We
are sure that the project has raised great awareness
amongst these participating families and hopefully
they now are beginning to see the financial benefits
of putting waste reduction measures into action.
Now that the Environmental Awareness Officer has
assisted you in getting this project up and running
with six families could you perhaps be able to initiate
this again this coming year with a different set of
families? You may be interested in the Green Home
Programme which may also assist you. The Green
Home Programme run by An Taisce was developed
as a framework to support and encourage all
householders to reduce their environmental impact, it
examines waste, electricity water etc.. It is supported
by the Environmental Protection Agency’s National
Waste Prevention Programme and can be undertaken
by an individual householder or a household can be

irELANd’S TidiEST TOwN
part of a community. You could contact Green Home,
www.greenhome.ie, and investigate if Abbeyshrule
Tidy Villages could participate as a community. Your
reuse of old teapots as bird nesting pots is innovative
but we wonder if you have witnessed any birds taking
up residence in the pots? We noted your poster
competition ‘Waste not Want not’ in your village
notice board and also liked that you ran an event in
conjunction with the Abbeyshrule Craft Fair and the
St. Sinneach’s National School Parents Association
where waste materials were reused as craft and play
resources. This adjudicator particularly likes how you
are creating fun opportunities to get the local children
involved in your work programmes and interact with
their local environment whilst developing positive
attitudes and approaches to waste management, in
particular reduction, reuse and recycling.
residential Areas:
Housing quality is excellent in Abbeyshrule. All
individual houses are presented extremely well.
Corncrake Meadow was admired but we noted the
partly unfinished section which is boarded up and that
part of the roadway needs completing. Landscaping
work was ongoing at Barley Gardens on our visit. There
are some extremely well maintained individual gardens
but one really stood out to this adjudicator and we
note from your appendices that this is George’s
garden!
roads, Streets and Back Areas:
The approach from Colehill is delightful; the
undergrounding of the cables certainly enhances the
view towards the village from this direction. A man
was varnishing the fence on the approach here to
create a fresh impact on arrival, well done. The new
footpath from the bridge to the Bog Road was under
construction on adjudication day. The adjudicator
enquired with one of the workmen as to when the
footpath would be completed and was informed it
would be in a few days time. The adjudicator thought
that it was a pity that these upgrade works were not
completed in time for our adjudication visit as this
may have bolstered your marks in this category. The
approach from the airfield is faultless.
General impression:
This adjudicator had heard a great deal of talk over
the years about the village of Abbeyshrule and was
looking forward to the adjudication visit with much
anticipation. Located between the Royal Canal and the
River Inny, we are pleased to report that Abbeyshrule
did not disappoint. On the day we visited, the sun
was out, flowers were blooming, and the village was
gleaming. Abbeyshrule Tidy Villages - you have raised
the bar this year. Grass was being cut at Our Lady of
Lourdes Church, the fencing on the approach from
Colehill was being painted, a man was collecting leaves
at the canal harbour, a householder was painting their
boundary wall, landscaping works were underway at
Barley Garden and as already mentioned the village
pump was receiving a make-over – there was certainly
a buzz in the air and a real sense of community spirit
and pride of place. Congratulations and well done to
all involved this year.
Second round Adjudication:
Driving along a pleasant country road I came to a
point where the grass verge was neatly cut and, as I
was not here before, I guessed I was in Abbeyshrule.
This was confirmed after a short distance on reaching
the bi-lingual sign for the village that was adorned
with attractive flowers A small notice attached to the
sign had a message “text alert area”. Next I saw the
well-kept graveyard enclosed with a great traditional
stone wall with a view of the ruins of the Cistercian
Abbey. A good road safety measure at the corner is in
place where the wall of the graveyard is replaced with
a splendid railing giving a good view of the road. The
new footpath looked well and is a welcome feature on
this busy road. Already I found there was a distinctive
flavour to the location.
There is limited commercial development in this
compact village where the Rustic Inn stands out, at the
back of which there is a splendid mural that makes
this part of the canal a most picturesque location. I
admired another well kept Bar that was freshly painted.
The bridges display really fine traditional building and
engineering qualities and it is a testament to those
great people that worked in the creation of these
structures that are as strong and sturdy today. It is
delightful to see these bridges so well maintained and
23

24
one portion was expertly repaired in recent times.
All of these bridges are quite picturesque and the
aqueduct taking the canal over the river Inney is really
spectacular. The old furniture store is now a place of
considerable interest with splendid artistic works on
both sides and front. It is delightful to see there the
words of that great song;Take me back to the good old
days, To the days when I went to school, The times
were bad but I never was sad, On the roads round
Abbeyshrule. The really good art work is continued
with the special painting on the window of the shed
near the well signposted recycling area. The two
traditional water pumps are notable historic items
and the white washed wall at one of them makes
a big impact. The splendid displays of landscaping
consistent around the village cover all available ground,
and long stretches of well manicured open grassed
spaces, plus unspoiled aesthetics are added to with
modern public lighting standards. Suitable picnic
furniture makes outstanding outdoor facilities where
the seating consists of good quality timber products.
A high standard is set near the bring bank at both
sides of the canal with a variety of delightful flowers
viewed from a wonderfully polished granite seat, and
this is matched in many other locations, notably in
George’s “four season’s garden”. I admired the many
tubs of flowers that adorn the surroundings such as
at the bring bank, at the church, at the water pumps
irELANd’S TidiEST TOwN
and so on and further colour and freshness is added
with hanging baskets and window boxes. It is obvious
that you are rewarded by getting compost from the
two community composters. The Bog Oak features
are impressive and remind us of the proximity of local
bogs. Good quality noticeboards give news of parish
matters plus local information for visitors, history of
the corncrake cluster sculpture, wildlife birds and fish,
details of the Abbey and so on. Other notices remind
us of bird sanctuary areas. The housing estates are
well presented and some unfinished work in one is
left in a responsible manner and we look forward to its
completion. A two storey white house with a red door
really stood out in the centre of the village, with some
other beauties around the area. The Waterways House
looked well and it would be great if it was occupied.
Energy and leadership abounds and show what can
be achieved from an enthusiastic group of people.
We are reminded of a condition of the competition
that additional information should be brief and only
relevant to this year’s competition unless it is part
of a multi annual plan. I appreciate that you have
put in a huge effort in putting together your entry,
but you could cut back on some of the additional
information. The first round adjudicator has given you
a comprehensive report and it is my pleasant task to
confirm these findings.
