Procedure: Caring <strong>for</strong> Fingernails<br />

1) Soaking<br />

①Put a mackintosh with covering towel on the<br />

bed.<br />

②Put the basin with warm water over the<br />

mackintosh.<br />

③Soak the client’s fingers in a basin of warm<br />

water and mild soap.<br />

④Scrub and wash them up.<br />

⑤Dry the client’s hands thoroughly by using the<br />

middle towel covering the mackintosh.<br />

2) Cutting<br />

①Trim the client’s nails with nail clippers.<br />

2) Cutting<br />

①Cut toenails straight across and do not round<br />

off the corners<br />

Cutting into the corners may cause ingrown<br />

nails. If the nails tend to grow inward at the<br />

corners, place a wisp of cotton under the nail to<br />

prevent toe pressure.<br />

A notch cut in the center will pull in edges and<br />

corners. Sometimes, very thick, hard toenails<br />

require surgical removal.<br />

<strong>NURSING</strong> ALERT<br />

Never cut the toenails of the clients with diabetes or hemophilia. These clients are particularly susceptible<br />

to injury.
