<strong>the</strong>y would br<strong>in</strong>g it up later, that I should not worry and that <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is that mo<strong>the</strong>r and me were alive and well and here with <strong>the</strong>m, and of course<br />

that I was “<strong>the</strong> spitt<strong>in</strong>g image of my fa<strong>the</strong>r Nedeljko when he was ten and both<br />

of <strong>the</strong>m lived toge<strong>the</strong>r and were like two bro<strong>the</strong>rs”.<br />

So mo<strong>the</strong>r, who was reluctantly dragg<strong>in</strong>g herself up <strong>the</strong> stairs beh<strong>in</strong>d us,<br />

and myself landed at <strong>the</strong> Radovićes, <strong>the</strong> only relatives I had met <strong>in</strong> my life.<br />

Besides Danilo, his wife Sava and <strong>the</strong>ir seven-year-old daughter Jovana and<br />

ten-year-old son Mišo, waited neatly l<strong>in</strong>ed up at <strong>the</strong> door. To make <strong>the</strong> occasion<br />

even merrier, <strong>the</strong>ir neighbour Kosa with her husband Risto and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fifteen-year-old daughter Nataša were <strong>the</strong>re too. S<strong>in</strong>ce Kosa, Risto and Nataša<br />

spent more time <strong>the</strong>re than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own flat on <strong>the</strong> opposite side of <strong>the</strong> hallway,<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r and I were thus <strong>the</strong> eighth and n<strong>in</strong>th occupants of what was, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> most, a fifty-square- metre flat. Our arrival only briefly <strong>in</strong>terrupted this<br />

neighbourly idyll; just long enough for <strong>the</strong>m all to kiss us on <strong>the</strong> cheeks three<br />

times and ask us seventeen times whe<strong>the</strong>r we were hungry, whe<strong>the</strong>r we wanted<br />

coffee or juice, whe<strong>the</strong>r we were tired, and show us a couple of mattresses on<br />

<strong>the</strong> bedroom floor, expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g that we would be sleep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Miša and Jovana’s<br />

room, <strong>the</strong>y would squeeze <strong>in</strong>to Danilo and Sava’s double bed.<br />

Throughout, <strong>the</strong>y all, whilst cont<strong>in</strong>uously <strong>in</strong>terrupt<strong>in</strong>g each o<strong>the</strong>r, cutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> and repeat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> questions, kept ask<strong>in</strong>g us about fa<strong>the</strong>r, about Pula<br />

and Belgrade and <strong>the</strong>n aga<strong>in</strong> about Belgrade, Pula, Belgrade aga<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> about fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

After this mov<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>in</strong> ceremony was over and we had <strong>in</strong>evitably had a few<br />

snacks, <strong>the</strong> news started and <strong>the</strong> ‘welcom<strong>in</strong>g committee’ quickly settled round<br />

<strong>the</strong> far-too-loud box and even managed to stay quiet for a while, so I was able<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d out that <strong>in</strong> Slavonia <strong>in</strong> Eastern Croatia, where fa<strong>the</strong>r had been sent <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ‘field’, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Yugoslav</strong> National Army had <strong>in</strong>tervened to pacify <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

parties. I was unable to understand which parties <strong>the</strong>se were supposed to be<br />

and who was argu<strong>in</strong>g what, s<strong>in</strong>ce Danilo and Risto started shout<strong>in</strong>g at some<br />

politician who appeared on <strong>the</strong> box; <strong>the</strong>y did <strong>the</strong> same with <strong>the</strong> next guy to<br />

appear on <strong>the</strong> screen, try<strong>in</strong>g to drown out <strong>the</strong> presenter who was read<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

some highly important news item at <strong>the</strong> time. Equally loud, Sava and Kosa<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> debate and soon all four were shout<strong>in</strong>g above each o<strong>the</strong>r. All I<br />

managed to figure out from all <strong>the</strong> shout<strong>in</strong>g was that Sava and Danilo were<br />
