<strong>Stone</strong> mastic asphalt is used to some extent in most European countries on
roads and highways. The use <strong>of</strong> SMA spread initially from Germany to
Sweden and Denmark and then to Norway, The Netherlands, Finland, Austria,
France, Switzerland and now Belgium. It has now been used throughout
Europe over the last 15 years. Figure 3.1 shows the wide spread use <strong>of</strong> SMA
across Europe.
In many European countries (Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway
and Sweden) it has become one <strong>of</strong> the surfacing solutions for resistance to
permanent deformation at higher pavement temperatures with increasing traffic
loading, tyre pressures, number <strong>of</strong> heavy vehicles and the introduction <strong>of</strong>
“super singles” (Van de Ven, et al, undated).
