<str<strong>on</strong>g>St<strong>on</strong>e</str<strong>on</strong>g> mastic asphalt is used to some extent in most European countries <strong>on</strong><br />
roads and highways. The use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> SMA spread initially from Germany to<br />
Sweden and Denmark and then to Norway, The Netherlands, Finland, Austria,<br />
France, Switzerland and now Belgium. It has now been used throughout<br />
Europe over the last 15 years. Figure 3.1 shows the wide spread use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> SMA<br />
across Europe.<br />
In many European countries (Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway<br />
and Sweden) it has become <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the surfacing soluti<strong>on</strong>s for resistance to<br />
permanent deformati<strong>on</strong> at higher pavement temperatures with increasing traffic<br />
loading, tyre pressures, number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> heavy vehicles and the introducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
“super singles” (Van de Ven, et al, undated).<br />
