DONATION TO
WESTMINSTER
BOATING BASE
Although we only started donating to
this charity last year, a second batch of
canoeing mitts and sailing gloves was
gratefully received by Alan Price, the
Chief Executive, in early October. This
active charity which is located on the
Embankment near Vauxhall Bridge, has
its own jetty which makes it well placed
to provide canoeing and sailing training
for disadvantaged and disabled people,
inner London schools and young
people from deprived areas. The
Boating Base, which is authorised to run
RYA sailing courses, BCU canoeing
courses and ICC courses for
powerboats, is part of the Lord Mayor’s
Sports Legacy Scheme and is now
looking to encourage adult members
(recommended by the Salvation Army
or other similar charities) who might
never get such a chance.

coming months as the winter boating
activities get underway.

GLOVERS’ COMPANY
GOLFING SOCIETY
It is sadly necessary to record that the
membership of the Golfing Society has
been shrinking for some time and we
could not survive by ourselves. However
we are able to join the Artists Rifles
Golfing Society for our three meetings
and the Autumn Meeting is also shared
with the Founders’ Company. Thus we
can still offer golfing Glovers the chance
to play at some of the finest courses in
the south of England. The Summer
Meeting took place at Chart Hills and
Rye Golf Clubs on 18 and 19 July. The
weather at Chart Hills was hardly
summery, even for 2011, but we
managed a round on a fine parklands
course. Our normal venue, Royal St
George’s at Sandwich had hosted the
Open Championship which finished the
day before and so was “out of bounds”
but we will return there next year. Rye
more than made up for Monday’s
aquatic round and the golf was enjoyed
by all. We are very grateful to Past
Assistant David Spry for once again
arranging these two days. The Autumn
meeting was held at Worplesdon Golf
Club on 14 October. Traditionally
we compete against the Founders’
Company for “The Gauntlet”. The
Founders were the winners of the Inter-
Livery Golf Competition, the Prince
Arthur Cup, this year and so we
considered that we did well to lose to
them by only 0.1 of a point. The scoring
system for this competition was
reputedly rejected by Duckworth and
Lewis as too complicated but it seems to
guarantee an enjoyable day’s golf and it
was good to meet the Founders again.

Summer Meeting: Mon 23 July at
Royal St George’s GC and Tue 24 July
at Rye GC
Autumn Meeting: Fri 12 October at
Worplesdon
We know there are Glovers who play
golf and are not on our mailing list. Why

fine courses at very reasonable prices?

The June 2012 Edition
The Editor welcomes articles on the activities of the Glovers’ Company,
its members and the Gloving trade. The closing date for submissions is
1st May 2012, though it may be possible to accept material
later by prior arangement. The preferred method for submitting copy is by
email, as a MS Word file, single-spaced and unjustified, with a minimum
of formatting. However, if this is not possible, articles may be sent to the
Editor on paper. Illustrations are also welcome but please contact the
Editor to discuss how they should be sent.
