Introduction: As if They Were A Basket<br />
As I am as were a born thing,<br />
as near the mouse as wing<br />
in such latitudes as thin the bones<br />
and as the snowy owl or bee,<br />
framed by the geometries<br />
<strong>of</strong> beak, tooth, nail,<br />
the fading call in hallways—<br />
referential as a peach,<br />
insistent as eclipse,<br />
eccentric at the core—<br />
and as camel, bird, bison, fish,<br />
antelope, fox and mole,<br />
crossing longitudes and roads<br />
as safe as thistle,<br />
companied by ghosts<br />
and by the slyly misdirected<br />
(how pavement burns them forward,<br />
thirsty as a willow root<br />
and bent,<br />
longing not the same as moving)<br />
cascading noiseless solitudes<br />
<strong>of</strong> blithe array;<br />
our skin sea-planked,<br />
consistent with a long light,<br />
drawn home foundering<br />
in a strange comfort.<br />
