Forward by SIR ANTHONY CARO
Festival President
Every community takes pride in its
artistic heritage and Purbeck is no
exception. Hence you will find that
many of our lectures this year are
about artists of the past who have
holidayed or lived in this part of Dorset
and whose work inspires artists today.
Some sixty of these are opening their
studios or exhibiting their work at our
main flagship exhibition at Rollington
Barn. The present generation in their
turn offers a helping hand to our artists of the future, and the
Festival includes an extensive programme of workshops and
competitions for Young Purbeck Artists. I am very happy to be
involved with this backdrop of continuing creative endeavour
and I very much hope you enjoy your visits to the Festival’s many
exhibitions and events.
Anthony Caro 2012
Introduction
For ten years our Arts Festival has stood on its own feet without
Government grants, drawing its strength from the commitment
of its members and the many local firms who have been
unfailingly generous with their support. However the traffic is
not all one way, for the Purbeck Festival brings a sharp focus to
this part of the Dorset coastline, encouraging visitors to make
that extra visit and bring custom to local shops while they are
here. The Festival is the result of months of individual energy
and enthusiasm from people who know that Purbeck is not only
a place of outstanding beauty, but also one of initiative and
enterprise. I hope their vision is infectious and this brochure will
encourage you to stray down the country lanes to see and hear
things that you might otherwise miss and that you will like what
you see.
PAW Festival relies on its sponsors and we hope provides
good value in return. Firms and organisations who demonstrate
their goodwill and support inevitably become part of a
growing major Dorset event with a high profile amongst residents
as well as occasional visitors. This brochure has a 25,000
reference for the whole spectrum of artistic activity in Purbeck.
Purbeck Young Artists 2012
Purbeck Young Artists (PYA) is
the childrens’ section of the Festival.
Our aim is to promote and celebrate
the creativity of children of all ages.
Each year the PYA team encourage
schools to explore a shared theme
and explore new creative activities.
Outside of school, the performers
who are playing at the Festival lead
more workshops to introduce young
people to their techniques and share their experience. This year
Stephen Warbeck, the Gabrieli Consort and several local artists
are sharing their skills.
The PYA theme this year is ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and children
are creating artwork, music, drama and creative writing inspired
by the music of Camille Saint-Saens.
We are delighted that 5 professional
artists have agreed to lead workshops
in 12 of our local schools. Children aged
7 to 17 are able to develop their skills
in painting, mask making, sculpture,
music and story telling with the help
of experienced professional artists.
Outcomes from the workshops will be
showcased at the PYA Celebration Event
at Swanage Middle School, at the ‘Crown
the Castle’ Parade and on exhibition at
Rollington Barn. YouTuba’s ‘Carnival of The Animals’ tea party
and concert offers an exciting opportunity to hear the music and
see the children’s artwork together.
For young film makers:
Thursday 7th June, 7.30pm | Swanage Middle School
Composer Stephen Warbeck won an
Oscar for his score for Shakespeare in
Love. Stephen will introduce his work and
play compositions to film with his
ensemble.
£12 adults, £2 children.
Daytime workshop 10am - 2pm for young
film makers wishing to work with Stephen to
create original music to their film or animation.
Swanage Middle School.
£5
Please email your film to the PYA Team (iamaPYA@
yahoo.co.uk) before 9th May to book a place on
the workshop.

WRITE STUFF!
FREE TICKETS for young journalists aged 10-19. This year
PYA are looking for young journalists to showcase their writing
by reviewing the Festival events.
The Festival is offering FREE tickets to any
event (one adult/one child) in return for a
children’s review of the event to encourage
young people to practice their writing skills
and meet deadlines.
For a chance to win, children should simply
email us 50 words explaining why they
would like to attend their chosen event and we will send the
best entries a set of free tickets. Children email their review (50 –
300 words) to the Festival within 24hours.
A maximum of 3 free ticket sets will be available per event.
Please email your request at least 5 days before your chosen event
Rollington Barn
The Rollington Exhibition is held in a
beautiful old stone farm building set in
rolling countryside, only a few minutes from
the village of Corfe Castle. This exhibition
provides a showcase of all the art on show
during the festival.
Each of our artists is represented in the
exhibition by at least one piece of work.
Artists whose studios are not open during
the festival have several pieces of their work
on show at Rollington. Artists who open
their studios to the public during the festival,
as advertised in this brochure, have a greater
selection of their work displayed at their
studios. Entrance to Artist’s studios is free.
CVs and photographs of other work, together with directions from
Rollington to artist’s own studios, are available for visitors to read at the
exhibition, thus assisting visitors to plan visits to the studios of those
artists whose work they admire. Prize winning entries from our Purbeck
Young Artist Competition, held during the past couple of months, are
also on show at Rollington.
A series of informal talks and demonstrations will be given by artists at
many lunchtimes and a selection of workshops will be held during the
day – all as listed in the Events section of this brochure.
Entrance to the Rollington Exhibition is free. Ample parking is available
and there are toilets on site. Work can be purchased and taken away on
the spot.
The Rollington Café is open during exhibition opening hours when you
can have tea or coffee, a light meal, an ice cream or a Purbeck cream tea.
A wide selection of home made cakes is always available and there is a
choice of curries at weekends.
During the day we present two celebrity lectures from Melvyn
Bragg and (we hope) Maggie Smith, providing she can escape
her film commitments. Last minute news about these and all
other events will be posted on our web site. In addition our
a series of informal lunchtime workshops and lectures at
After our art exhibitions have closed in the evening, there is a
wealth of additional entertainment including concerts from
performers of international repute, films and lectures by people
at the top of their field. These are listed in our Events Calendar
on the page opposite. You will find even more to amuse and
entertain you in our Fringe programme. Information about
everything is on our web site (www.purbeckartweeks.co.uk),
