About Your Professor<br />

Eric H. Cl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Dr. Eric H. Cl<strong>in</strong>e, a former Fulbright scholar, is chair of the Department of<br />

Classical <strong>and</strong> Semitic Languages <strong>and</strong> Literatures at the George Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

University <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C., where he holds a jo<strong>in</strong>t appo<strong>in</strong>tment as an<br />

associate professor <strong>in</strong> both the Classics/Semitics Department <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Anthropology Department.<br />

A prolific researcher, Dr. Cl<strong>in</strong>e is the author or editor of seven books <strong>and</strong><br />

has more than seventy articles <strong>and</strong> book reviews to his credit. His books<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude <strong>The</strong> Battles of Armageddon: Megiddo <strong>and</strong> the Jezreel Valley from the<br />

Bronze Age to the Nuclear Age, which received the 2001 Biblical<br />

Archaeology Society (BAS) Publication Award for “Best Popular Book on<br />

Archaeology”; Jerusalem Besieged: From Ancient Canaan to Modern Israel;<br />

Sail<strong>in</strong>g the W<strong>in</strong>e-Dark Sea: International Trade <strong>and</strong> the Late Bronze Age<br />

Aegean; Amenhotep III: Perspectives on His Reign (co-editor); <strong>The</strong> Aegean<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Orient <strong>in</strong> the Second Millennium BC; Thutmose III: A New Biography;<br />

<strong>and</strong> a book for young adults entitled <strong>The</strong> Ancient Egyptian World (coauthor<br />

with Jill Rubalcaba).<br />

Professor Cl<strong>in</strong>e received the Morton Bender Award for Teach<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />

George Wash<strong>in</strong>gton University <strong>in</strong> 2004 <strong>and</strong> the Archaeological Institute of<br />

America’s National “Excellence <strong>in</strong> Undergraduate Teach<strong>in</strong>g” Award for 2005.<br />

He currently teaches a wide variety of courses, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Troy <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Trojan</strong><br />

<strong>War</strong>, <strong>History</strong> of Ancient Greece, <strong>History</strong> of Rome, <strong>and</strong> Art <strong>and</strong> Archaeology of<br />

the Aegean Bronze Age.<br />

Professor Cl<strong>in</strong>e has lectured at the Smithsonian Institution <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art <strong>in</strong> New York, <strong>and</strong> the Skirball Museum<br />

<strong>in</strong> Los Angeles. His research has been featured <strong>in</strong> the Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Post, the<br />

New York Times, US News & World Report, the London Daily Telegraph, the<br />

London Mirror, <strong>and</strong> many other publications around the world.<br />

In addition, Professor Cl<strong>in</strong>e has been featured on numerous radio <strong>and</strong> television<br />

broadcasts such as the BBC World Services, National Public Radio, the<br />

Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Channel, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>History</strong><br />

Channel.<br />

Dr. Cl<strong>in</strong>e is married, with two children, two cats, <strong>and</strong> vary<strong>in</strong>g numbers of fish.<br />
