Answering His Call TWC alum finds success with local Christian band Calling Glory A Tennessee Wesleyan College alum and three other young men located in Athens, Tenn., felt the calling to play music and worship God, a calling that eventually led to the formation of Calling Glory, a Christian band that has taken the Christian music genre by storm. Having twice made the Top 25 Billboard chart for most popular Christian songs, and passionately toured the east coast of the United States, Calling Glory performs with a mission to bring heaven to earth and is set on advancing the Kingdom of God through Christian music. In the fall of 2009 they released their EP Daylight and in November of 2011 released their follow-up album Teach Me to Love. Dana Potvin, Jones Beene, Logan Early and TWC alum Drew Crabtree originally came together in the early months of 2008 with one goal in mind: to write Christian Music in response to what God has done and is doing in their lives. During the first three years of playing with Calling Glory, Crabtree was a student at Tennessee Wesleyan, putting in hard work in the college’s music department and developing the craft that he grew up passionately wanting to pursue as a career in adulthood. When Crabtree first walked onto the TWC campus, he immediately felt a connection to the small private liberal arts college and its thriving music department. “TWC was absolutely instrumental in my life and my passion for music,” said Crabtree, the bassists for Calling Glory who received a bachelor of music education degree from the college in 2011. “Music was my life while at Tennessee Wesleyan. Those classes were my focus all day, every day. I came into the music 8 ARCHES | Fall 2012 8 ARCHES | Spring 2013 program with a different mindset and applied the classical music education I received to what I was doing with Christian rock and pop music.” Calling Glory lead singer Potvin also attended Tennessee Wesleyan, taking business courses in 2005 before the formation of the band. “Just like Drew, music has also been a passion of mine,” said Potvin, who worked as a worship pastor in the years leading up to his time in Calling Glory. “My entire life seems like it was leading up to what I’m doing now. Calling Glory, music, worshiping God…it’s my entire life’s purpose.” Potvin’s musical parents encouraged his passion for the art, telling him to live without regrets and to chase his dreams. Chase his dreams he did, leading Calling Glory to play at 2007’s Riverbend in Chattanooga, Tenn., the stage for the band’s first big break. “We were really lucky to have Brian Scoggin notice us,” said Potvin, who first met the drummer for the popular Christian band Casting Crowns that day at the music festival. “He got us in touch with Jason Hoard, Third Day’s guitarist. We were then given the opportunity to record at Black Cat Studios in Atlanta, Ga. We recorded our first EP and it took off. The rest, as they say, is history.” Performing with some of the largest names in Christian music and being recognized as a respected name in the industry, the “Tennessee Wesleyan was absolutely instrumental in my life and my passion for music.” ~ Drew Crabtree
I want to be Your hands Be the hands that restore the hurting I want to see the lost begin to sing So light a fire inside Let it burn in this heart that’s longing To see You move in all of those in need members of Calling Glory hope that listeners will not only hear the gospel through their music but that those around them will also witness it at work in their own personal lives. “Calling Glory is like a family,” said Crabtree. “My Tennessee Wesleyan family, my professors and classmates in the music program, they prepared me for the work I’m doing now in Calling Glory.
