CANTERBURY.<br />

On the right hand of the way from this city to Dover, in the south east suburb, Hugh /a the<br />

second of that name, abbat of St. Augustine’s, built to the honor of St. Laurence /b, A. D. 1137.<br />

an hospital for the relief of leprous monks, or the poor parents and relations of any of the monks<br />

of that ab<strong>by</strong>. It consisted of a warden or keeper, a priest or chaplain, one clerk, and sixteen<br />

brethren and sisters; and the chief or senior of these sisters was sometimes called the prioress.<br />

The revenues of this house were valued, 26 Hen. 8. at 39 l. 8 s. 6 d. in the whole /c, and 31 l.<br />

7 s. 10 d. clear. It was alienated in the time of K. Edward 6. to one Tipsal /d, and after <strong>by</strong><br />

Q. Mary granted to Sr. <strong>John</strong> Parrot.<br />

DOVER.<br />

An hospital for poor leprous persons begun about the year 1141. upon the solicitation of<br />

Osbern and Godwin, two monks of St. Martin’s, who subjected the same to the disposal of<br />

their prior. It was dedicated to St. Bartholomew, and, after the dissolution, granted 6 Ed. 6.<br />

to Sr. Tho. Palmer.<br />
