Diatonic instruments contain additional F# and Bb bars, thus enabling playing in a variety of keys. Since it might be desirable to have as many different kinds of sounds as possible, many start out, if budgets permit, with one instrument in each category. Metal instruments tend to overshadow wood instruments in tonal volume and this, therefore, might be a consideration in doubling on xylophones and cutting back on metallophones. A Bass Xylophone is strongly recommended as an early choice. Sub-Contra and Contra Bars make excellent Timpani Drum replacements because of their truer pitch and richer tone.
