They occupied the farm in 2000. Figure 7.27 also maps the extent of the farm in 1941, when A.D. Wood was given an “A” rating by the National Farm Survey. He also rented the 29-acre Leas (Lees) Farm, and ran the combined 62 acres with the assistance of one laborer. Crabree’s medium soils were said to be of fair quality, with good arable and fair pastures.

The farmstead now called Lyddendane was built by churchwarden Thomas Pilcher c.1756 (Figure 7.28) at what had been de Lyuynden in 1292 and de Lyuenedane in 1327. In 1578 Levyn Dane was a rental of Combe manor. Philippe Lewes was in arrears of rent for land formerly Gregory Rands. Richard Dallye was in possession of the rental of what was called “Levendane” from Aldelose manor in 1616, and Thomas Skelton had one messuage there. On 15 Oct. 1623 there was a Deed of Feoffment from John Skilton to Clement Court for one messuage called Lidden Dane and two pieces of land of 2 acres in Hastingleigh, bounded by the lands late of the Monastery of St. Augustine without the walls of the City of Canterbury towards the east, to the lands of Christopher Daly and to the Kings Street leading to Poll Croft towards the south, and to Shrubbs Wood to the north. Other places mentioned were Western lease, Broome Close and Barn Close (Centre for Kentish Studies U214, T153). Both John Skelton and Clement Court appeared elsewhere in Hastingleigh in Chapter 4. The Pilchers were tenants of Combe manor in the sixteenth century and their farm, also called Levendane in the earlier records, was owned and occupied by Thomas Pilcher in 1689 and Paul Pilcher in 1780. Paul was succeeded by another Thomas Pilcher, who owned the property through 1830. It was subleased to David Kingsland in 1790, but thereafter was occupied by Thomas Kidder.
