This subj ect is taken up during<br />
the secone! half of the first year. It includes<br />
the comparative structure of the<br />
vertebrata and their relation to the con clltions<br />
of life, the different organs and<br />
their functions, resemblances and differences.<br />
A practical acquaintance with the<br />
arrangement and mechanism of the vertebrate<br />
skeleton is then acquired and the<br />
bearing of the various parts on the question<br />
of health and sanitation becomes familiar.<br />

1. Zoology. The purpose of this study is to afford an opportunity<br />
of examining the leading- types of animal life, chiefly invertebrate,<br />
and also of becoming acquainted with some of the common<br />
living objects with which they meet in daily life. Man's relation to<br />
the rest of the organic creation, the advantages which he receives and<br />
the losses which he suffers from them, also receive attention.<br />

Phcenogamic Botany. This subject includes the .structure and<br />
functions of the organs of the phcenogarpic plants, studied both by<br />
the unaided eye and by the microscope. Systematic work is also<br />
done in naming and classifying the plants of Southern California.<br />
