CITY MAGAZINE COVER STORY
What’s the cm: most difficult
part of the
job?
Scott Davis: Navigating
through the complexity
of tribal-state-federal
laws, so that at the end
of the day they work in
unison. Also, striving
for that continuity in
leadership to sustain
unison, which can make
or break good work done
between governments.
What has cm: been the
biggest
challenge of
your life?
Scott Davis: My battle
with addiction. There
was a time in my life
where I didn’t have any
direction. I was out of
college, working, single,
had a lot of free-time,
and I used alcohol and
drugs. I finally had to
get some help; I went
into treatment. I was
very fortunate in that
I recognized it. I just
knew I wasn’t being the true me. I didn’t have
to wait for a judge, a court or an accident to
decide for me. One thing I learned is that you
have to sober up for yourself—not for anyone
else. The day you do that, God will take care
of the rest.
What’s your basic approach to
cm: life?
Scott Davis: Living my life with balance. The
only tattoo I have is on my back and it’s of the
Medicine Wheel, with the four colors and the
four quadrants: Spiritual, Physical, Emotional
and Mental. To sustain that balance is key.
Sometimes I don’t eat right, or exercise, or
pray enough and I feel it. Then I need to work
to get back into unison.
What do you want on your
cm: headstone?
Scott Davis: Here’s a guy who worked
really hard and was committed not only to
his people, but to people in general. I love
people and I want them to succeed. Nothing
stimulates me more than watching a person
succeed, knowing that they have internal
sovereignty, an inner sobriety, an inner peace
of God, and knowing that maybe I had a little
bit to do with it.
