Achieving Multiple Literacies 

Through the Magic of Poetry 

Iwrote a speech 

for a group of 

teachers in the 

city of Philadelphia in 

which I said that we 

needed to reach out 

to our children in the 

same way that we 

reach out when making 

a phone call. Two teachers 

followed me to my car 

insisting that I turn that 

thought into a poem. So I did. 

Over the years, this poem has proved to be a teacher 

favorite and also a favorite example of how my life as a 

teacher and as a teacher of teachers has always intersected 

with my life as a poet.

As an educator, 

teacher 

and poet, I 

have given deep consideration 

to the needs of 

children in every line that I 

write and publish. I hold their faces in mind when I write. 

Of course, I have certain advantages. I know the children 

of today. I have met them and studied with them, taught 

them in the schools and in the streets, in their places of 

recreation and of worship, and the centers of our communities, 

in cities, suburbs and towns all over our country 

for other thirty years. Now I am also helping to prepare 

their teachers as a assistant professor of education at 

York College of the City University of New York. Like you, 

I am looking for answers, looking for “what works.” 

What I want to bring to children and to their teachers and 

classrooms is a joy in learning, a joy in poetry, literature, 

and storytelling, a joy that will aid them and their teachers 

in the quests for understanding and achievement. 

At Harlin Jacque Publications all of our books and programs 

are special and address the needs in the lifestages 

of young people, as well as having universal 

appeal and application. I wrote many of the poems in 

The Sun Is On from the viewpoint of a child. I believe 

that a child’s voice and a child’s understanding are

I‘ve Known 

Rivers Press is proud to introduce, as its first title, the 

work of poet Herman Alexander Baron III. In 

Conversations with My Soul: Messages from a 

Wounded Warrior, Baron gives us a voice that is both 

a cry from the heart and a window into a unique 

poetic voice. 

Baron, who is incarcerated in a federal prison in the 

south, was born in 1976. His poems are part of a long 

tradition in African American letters of poetry and song 

of the incarcerated and the enslaved. From the 

enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley, to the folksinger Huddie 

Leadbetter (Leadbelly) and the poet Ethridge Knight, 

both of whom won their freedom through their art, 

African American letters and song have long included 

those forcibly held at the margins of society in its 

ranks. Its prose writers have also included former 

slaves and former prisoners, from Frederick Douglass 

to Chester Himes and Malcolm X. 

This is the tradition that’s produced this young poet and 

his very special book. His voice, though still 

in development, shows 

remarkable confidence.

This retelling

less an 

Aesop’s Fable and 

more a visit with 

the characteristics of 

some of the people I 

know. But that’s actually what 

a fable is. The lion is a personality that has traveled a 

gap of several centuries, yet in many ways he’s the 

same lion. But the lion 

is also a cultural statement, 

a message to 

some of those who 

think they “got it going 

on.” I hear them in the 

cadence and arrogance 

of Lion. I could 

not develop this story 

without the push of a 

deadline and the 

continued intervention 

of reviews that 

reiterated that the 

story was not complete. 

I thought I 

was too tired to add 

whatever… and yet 

Lion won. He 

wasn’t finished yet. 

And even as I completed his story, I want to 

create more Lion stories. In fact, 

look for my retelling of the street rap 

that Oscar Brown, Jr. cleaned up, 

“Signifying Monkey.” This is my 

attempt to pressure myself into sitting 

down to sweat through the next 

story.

LION ROAMED THE African terrain, much like other 

lions you might have seen in photographs in 

National Geographic magazines, or those you may 

have witnessed during TV shows and in the movies. 

Although he looked similar to the captive lions you 

see in your local zoo, he was definitely unlike them 

in that he was free, born free, free as the wind 

blows, free as the grass . . . well you probably get 

my drift. And yes, he roared a wild, untamed, “I can 

chew you up for dinner as easily as I can pick my 

teeth” roar. He roared upon waking up, and at any 

time or anyplace throughout the day. Usually he 

roared for no other reason than that he liked the 

sound of his deep, ferocious, macho, king-of-thejungle 

tones. 

I am the king. 

I am king of everything!

He looked at his reflection in the river.

Dr. Lindamichellebaron has been publisher and
