“REACH OUT AND TOUCH
SOMEBODY’S MIND”
From For the Love of Life
by Lindamichellebaron
TO ORDER
Sometimes you just want to say “Hello.”
Maybe they’re home, but you don’t know.
So, you let the phone ring a time or two,
Phone: (516) 489-0120
then what you probably will do is hang it up.
Fax: (516) 292-9120
Maybe you’ll “drop another dime”
Email: harlinjacquepub@aol.com
when you’re able to find the time.
So you hang it up.
www.lindamichellebaron.com
But when you KNOW someone is home
and you must reach them, now, by phone,
you don’t just ring a time or two.
You ring and ring ‘til you get through.
If no one picks up, “it must be me,
I dialed a two, I meant a three.”
So, you redial and take more care,
because you know someone is there.
Maybe something is wrong with the line.
So, you call the operator this time.
You’re more concerned, you start to think,
“Perhaps the equipment is on the blink.”
So, you call phone repair,
explain to them someone IS there.
There must be something they can do.
It is a MUST that you get through.
Well, let me try to make this clear. . .
Compare the phone call to a classroom,
where a child sits w-a-y back in the rear.
He’s wearing shabby clothes . . .
has uncombed hair.
He’s so much slower than the rest . . .
scores so much lower on every test.
Yes, that’s the child I mean.
There’s only one way we can find
the potential of THAT child’s mind.
We have to believe. . .We have to know . . .
We have to try everything
as though it is urgent that we get through . . .
Act exactly the way we do
when we’re calling on the phone,
and we KNOW
someone is home.
Achieving Multiple Literacies
Through the Magic of Poetry
Iwrote a speech
for a group of
teachers in the
city of Philadelphia in
which I said that we
needed to reach out
to our children in the
same way that we
reach out when making
a phone call. Two teachers
followed me to my car
insisting that I turn that
thought into a poem. So I did.
Over the years, this poem has proved to be a teacher
favorite and also a favorite example of how my life as a
teacher and as a teacher of teachers has always intersected
with my life as a poet.
—Dr. Lindamichellebaron
Lindamichellebaron, from For the Love of Life and
also available as a poster (catalog page 16)
www.lindamichellebaron.com
As an educator,
teacher
and poet, I
have given deep consideration
to the needs of
children in every line that I
write and publish. I hold their faces in mind when I write.
Of course, I have certain advantages. I know the children
of today. I have met them and studied with them, taught
them in the schools and in the streets, in their places of
recreation and of worship, and the centers of our communities,
in cities, suburbs and towns all over our country
for other thirty years. Now I am also helping to prepare
their teachers as a assistant professor of education at
York College of the City University of New York. Like you,
I am looking for answers, looking for “what works.”
What I want to bring to children and to their teachers and
classrooms is a joy in learning, a joy in poetry, literature,
and storytelling, a joy that will aid them and their teachers
in the quests for understanding and achievement.
At Harlin Jacque Publications all of our books and programs
are special and address the needs in the lifestages
of young people, as well as having universal
appeal and application. I wrote many of the poems in
The Sun Is On from the viewpoint of a child. I believe
that a child’s voice and a child’s understanding are
respectfully and joyfully presented in these pages.
The Sun Is On is also a book full of humor and the experience
of life. In The Sun Is On I have created a “Poetry
& Idea Book” that encourages students to produce their
own writing and connect with their own experiences.
Our skilled and experienced educators and educational
consultants have assisted me in adding the additional
components of wonderful and engaging lesson plans,
including a variety of graphic organizers and visualization
aids, in the teacher’s editions, covering all content
areas and designed to create and encourage enthusiastic
young readers and writers.
Down through history, poetry has been one of the most
powerful ways that people reach to each other. Bring
the power of poetry and students’ personal responses
to poetry to your school and classroom today.
As our
children
and our adolescents
grow older,
different experiences shape their
future. Rhythm & Dues is a collection of poetry by
Lindamichellebaron that relates to their changing
world. The Rhythm & Dues writing program includes
activities and writing exercises that encourage creative
thinking and writing skills in children and adolescents.
Rhythm & Dues and the accompanying programs
present a deeply sympathetic environment in which the
budding writer can explore his or her strengths or
weaknesses. At the same time, this is a challenging
program, one which presents the young reader with
options, questions, responsibilities, and decisions.
Skills are acquired, used and practiced. This combination
of practice and effort combined with the permission
to create and the respect for cultural diversity and
multiple literacies are in line with the author’s basic
assumption of responsibility for and connection to her
audience.
Rhythm & Dues, as befits the title, is also one of
Lindamichellebaron’s earthiest, most sincere, and intense
books, deeply connected to and drawing from the oral traditions
of African American music and storytelling.
Here, Dr. Lindamichellebaron has created a vehicle for
students to create in their own "Oral Tradition," meaning
that they will have the opportunity to read, relate,
enjoy, and make a connection with her two poetry
books, Rhythm & Dues: Poetry & Ideas and Rhythm &
Dues: Poetry Response Book. Both present poetry
interpretation in a “user-friendly" format. Students will
learn to interpret poetry and adapt this process to
other literature. In reading and using these two books,
students will learn to appreciate and love poetry. Each
poem is presented in a creative format and is accompanied
with related skills and activities. These activities
engage students and present the concept of poetry in
a clear, concise format. Each poem is also accompanied
by skills that foster and encourage critical thinking
and thoughtful creativity.
RHYTHM & DUES
Poetry & Idea Book
Rhythm & Dues is a poetry book that
is more than just poetry. It is about coming of age. And
the rites of passage. It is a vehicle by which one can
travel from one stage of life to the next. I believe
Rhythm & Dues should become an integral part of the
middle/high school personal and academic experience.
The parent
connection
is valued
and respected by all our educational consultants at
Harlin Jacque. We also write, edit and design our
books with the family in mind.
It is very important that you, as a parent, participate
with interest in your children’s education throughout
their school years. With that in mind, activities for
Anthony Ant and Grady Grasshopper were prepared
for a future of enrichment and involvement between
you and your children.
This well-loved fable is a favorite of children of all ages.
Children love to hear and reread it over and over again.
When the end of the story is read or heard and the
activities begin, children’s imaginations run rampant,
thoughts begin to form, and new ideas develop.
I know these activities will allow you and your children
to spend quality time together. In addition to teaching
your children to appreciate others, these exercises will
help foster a lifelong appreciation of writing, reading,
and learning.
It is very important that all attempts at reading and
writing are valued. Allow children to make mistakes
and remember the importance of correcting errors
with patience and love.
Don’t forget to be inventive and creative. You know your
child better than anyone else. Choose the activities that
best suit your child’s age, needs, and interests. Begin
a library of great children’s books. Have your children
choose their favorite book of the month. Establish
weekly library trips. Don’t forget the library card.
Remember a literacy-rich home environment will provide
your children with literacy-rich futures.
You are
about to
enter the
world of poetry. Not just any
world of poetry but the world of poetry inhabited by
poet extraordinaire, Dr. Lindamichellebaron. These
poems, so various and tender, so deceptively simple
and yet deeply complex, will touch your heart, force
you to see life differently and make your spirit dance.
To read them is to be in her presence. It will be as if
you are holding her in the palm of your hands while
she personally shares her soul with you. Can a poet be
raucous and decorous? Can she be simultaneously
ancient in wisdom and young in innocence? Can a warrior
woman be tender and an earth mother? Can she
wield a word as fierce as a sword? Can a woman so
black be also so entirely composed of a many-colored
rainbow of humanity? I invite you to address yourself to
these questions as you follow
Lindamichellebaron’s
captivating poetic voice
down the labyrinth of
time and spirit, word
and idea; and then, as
we used to say, “you tell
me.” I know you will
enjoy reading For the
“JUMP FOR THE SUN”
From For the Love of Life
by Lindamichellebaron
Live like we know
There’s a race to be won
But to win it we have to
Jump for the sun.
Don’t let the sun shine on our face.
Jump for the sun. Don’t stand in place.
The universe has enough for everyone
But to get it we have to jump for the sun.
We know what it takes to begin.
Get knowledge and stamina. Get set to win
Get discipline, focus and control
We’re getting ready to reach a goal.
Jump for the sun.
I‘ve Known
Rivers Press is proud to introduce, as its first title, the
work of poet Herman Alexander Baron III. In
Conversations with My Soul: Messages from a
Wounded Warrior, Baron gives us a voice that is both
a cry from the heart and a window into a unique
poetic voice.
Baron, who is incarcerated in a federal prison in the
south, was born in 1976. His poems are part of a long
tradition in African American letters of poetry and song
of the incarcerated and the enslaved. From the
enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley, to the folksinger Huddie
Leadbetter (Leadbelly) and the poet Ethridge Knight,
both of whom won their freedom through their art,
African American letters and song have long included
those forcibly held at the margins of society in its
ranks. Its prose writers have also included former
slaves and former prisoners, from Frederick Douglass
to Chester Himes and Malcolm X.
This is the tradition that’s produced this young poet and
his very special book. His voice, though still
in development, shows
remarkable confidence.
With echoes
of influences ranging
from today’s hip
hop vernacular to
the “cry” of Rilke,
Herman Baron’s work
speaks with the voice
of a generation of
African American men
whose culture is linked
with incarceration, but
one that nevertheless,
seeks to liberate its
soul. With these poems,
these “conversations”
Baron gives us the voice
of his liberating soul.
“Champion”
From Conversations with
My Soul
by Herman Baron III
I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired,
Having to cry in the dark,
Unable to express the emotions I truly feel
in my heart,
Because it wasn’t scripted in my part.
But I’m human, dammit, not an actor.
Did you think to factor into the equation
That maybe I was just good at the art of
persuasion?
I spent years living behind my disguise,
Infecting my mind and body with lies,
So I could be a part of lives I knew nothing about.
I brainwashed myself into doubt
And now it’s a heavyweight bout.
I’m blocking out all the screams and shouts,
I’m focused for the title fight of my life,
It’s the 3rd round and victory is nowhere in sight.
Self-destruction keeps hitting me with rights
It’s taking all my might just to stay in the fight.
10th round and I’m still on my feet.
My adversary is underestimating me,
Doesn’t know I’m playing for keeps,
And when the final bell rings
I’ll be the true champion of my life.
This retelling
is
less an
Aesop’s Fable and
more a visit with
the characteristics of
some of the people I
know. But that’s actually what
a fable is. The lion is a personality that has traveled a
gap of several centuries, yet in many ways he’s the
same lion. But the lion
is also a cultural statement,
a message to
some of those who
think they “got it going
on.” I hear them in the
cadence and arrogance
of Lion. I could
not develop this story
without the push of a
deadline and the
continued intervention
of reviews that
reiterated that the
story was not complete.
I thought I
was too tired to add
whatever… and yet
Lion won. He
wasn’t finished yet.
And even as I completed his story, I want to
create more Lion stories. In fact,
look for my retelling of the street rap
that Oscar Brown, Jr. cleaned up,
“Signifying Monkey.” This is my
attempt to pressure myself into sitting
down to sweat through the next
story.
FABLE” by Lindamichellebaron
LION ROAMED THE African terrain, much like other
lions you might have seen in photographs in
National Geographic magazines, or those you may
have witnessed during TV shows and in the movies.
Although he looked similar to the captive lions you
see in your local zoo, he was definitely unlike them
in that he was free, born free, free as the wind
blows, free as the grass . . . well you probably get
my drift. And yes, he roared a wild, untamed, “I can
chew you up for dinner as easily as I can pick my
teeth” roar. He roared upon waking up, and at any
time or anyplace throughout the day. Usually he
roared for no other reason than that he liked the
sound of his deep, ferocious, macho, king-of-thejungle
tones.
I am the king.
I am king of everything!
He roared.
Poemas e Ideas
ABOUT ABOUT
Harlin Jacque Publications and
Dr. Lindamichellebaron
“You can sense immediately that Lindamichellebaron
has looked deep into the eyes, the faces, the hearts,
and the minds of the young and not so young people
for a long time.”
—Ruby Dee
Actress and Author
“These poems, so various and tender, so deceptively
simple and yet deeply complex, will touch your
heart, force you to see life differently and make
your spirit dance.”
—Wally Amos
Literacy Advocate and Cookie Baron
Lindamichellebaron’s intellectual light burst like a
sunbeam flashing into unlit places. She brought
vigor, energy, hope, joy and promise to children
whose school experiences had been devoid of
color, brightness, or cultural relevance. She lit their
“unlit lamps.” Until today, she persists in this
sacred mission.
