presented now not as photos, but <strong>in</strong> the form<br />

of names of urban areas. Thus the awareness<br />

of the <strong>in</strong>terviewees was guided toward general<br />

evaluations, images <strong>and</strong> prejudices <strong>in</strong>stead to<br />

on specific traits. The area or neighborhood<br />

names were written clearly readable on plastic<br />

slips. They are easy to h<strong>and</strong>le if there is only<br />

dim light with<strong>in</strong> the houses. They don’t get<br />

dirty if the <strong>in</strong>terview had to be conducted <strong>in</strong><br />

front of the houses at the marg<strong>in</strong> of a small lane<br />

with few space <strong>and</strong> probably some ra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> the<br />

monsoon season (see Figure 6).<br />

People reacted differently to this method.<br />

Most were very <strong>in</strong>terested or amused, but to<br />

some it was also somewhat foreign. No won-<br />

der <strong>in</strong> an ethnically <strong>and</strong> economically mixed<br />

neighborhood. As already said I used this procedure<br />

<strong>in</strong>tentionally only after hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>in</strong><br />

field for five months. I had visited all <strong>in</strong>terviewed<br />

people several times before this specific<br />

<strong>in</strong>terview. I had <strong>in</strong>formal discussions <strong>and</strong><br />

conducted a household census <strong>and</strong> residential-history<br />

<strong>in</strong>terview with all of them. So they<br />

knew me <strong>and</strong> my overall research theme (<strong>in</strong>traurban<br />

residential mobility).<br />

Introduc<strong>in</strong>g this specific <strong>in</strong>terview I<br />

stressed that it would not aim at ‘correct’ answers,<br />

but that I was <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> their personal<br />

perception <strong>and</strong> evaluation. That was very<br />

important as my trials with this formal procedure<br />

had revealed that some people are rem<strong>in</strong>ded<br />

to <strong>in</strong>telligence tests. In a city with many<br />

schools, universities <strong>and</strong> offices many people<br />
