Rhopalocarpus louvelii (Danguy) Capuron Risk of extinction: Least Concern (although the population of
this species is predicted to decline it has several large and
Vernacular names:
Andriambavinaveotra, Hafotrakora, Havoha lahy, Lombiro,
Lombiry, Mantaditra, Tavia, Tsimandoasala
Description:
Medium to large trees. Leaves medium, with three primary
veins (lateral equal in width to central), tertiary veins evident
above, margin undulate, coriaceous. Inflorescence a manyflowered
panicle. Flowers with 4 sepals, 4 white petals,
many stamens. Fruits large/very large, woody/fleshy,
globose/lobed, surface smooth or weakly warty.
Habitat:
• Vegetation type: low elevation evergreen forest, midelevation
humid forest, dry deciduous forest, littoral forest
• Bioclimate: humid, subhumid, dry
• Geology: basement rock, lake and alluvial deposits, lavas,
sandstone, tertiary limestone
• Altitude: 10 - 1,500 m
Biology:
• Pollination: probably insect (on basis of flower
characteristics also observations of bees seen visiting the
flowers of other Rhopalocarpus species)
• Seed dispersal: probably lemurs (Tranga François (pers.
comm.) reports that the fruits of this species are eaten by
lemurs at Manombo RS).
Uses: None reported.
Distribution:
apparently secure sub-populations within protected areas).
Conservation recommendations: good management of
protected areas
• Abundance (mat. inds.) 250 – 1,000 -
Predicted future decline:
• because of habitat loss: 50-80% (cause of loss = shifting cultivation)
• because of exploitation or poor regeneration: unknown, but decline
possible because of exploitation and poor regeneration resulting from
increasing rarity of animal seed dispersers.
