Unit five is a six-week study of Sophocles’ great<br />

tragic trilogy Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonnus, and<br />

Antigone.<br />

Unit six is a four-week study of <strong>the</strong> modern<br />

French playwright Anouilh’s retelling of Antigone<br />

with a focus on how one’s worldview affects one’s<br />

notions of <strong>the</strong> heroic and <strong>the</strong> tragic.<br />

Our high school study of literature runs uns<br />

in parallel <strong>to</strong> our study of his<strong>to</strong>ry. While e<br />

our tenth grade students are studying<br />

medieval his<strong>to</strong>ry, we also have <strong>the</strong>m<br />

study medieval literature. Studying <strong>the</strong><br />

two subjects <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r makes each class a<br />

richer experience.<br />

This inductive study focuses on <strong>the</strong><br />

texts and gives detailed reading assignments, t<br />

observation questions, and discussion questions. The<br />

book is intended <strong>to</strong> guide a parent and student,<br />

teacher and student, or tu<strong>to</strong>r and student as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

read <strong>the</strong> important works of literature from Anglo-<br />

Saxon poetry and Beowulf <strong>to</strong> Chaucer and Hamlet.<br />

The final work studied in <strong>the</strong> guide is Rosencrantz<br />

and Guildenstern are Dead which allows <strong>the</strong><br />

students <strong>to</strong> compare and contrast <strong>the</strong> Medieval,<br />

Renaissance, and Modern world views.<br />

The text, analysis, and discussion questions are all<br />

written from a biblical, Christian worldview.<br />
