Blossoms in
the Blood...
From Trish Bull, Little Gem Nursery & Landscaping
I w a s
born in Ferntree
Gully and grew up
in Emerald. Nursery work was
born in my blood.
When I was five I would
holiday at Kallista with my
gran and grandpa and they ran
a wholesale tree nursery and I
watered the big trees in pots and
helped with the weeding.
Grandpa then started his own
retail nursery at Montrose and
Dad worked for him. I would go
over on weekends and sell cut
ROSES ALL
THE WAY
By Mark Davidson
November, and roses
blooms are bursting
out everywhere.
Wonderful to see them,
and surprising how resilient
they are. If you really want
gorgeous blooms, delicious
fragrance and plants that
f l o w e r s
that Mum and Dad grew. We sat
on the edge of the road outside
the nursery and had a lot of
lovely, regular customers.
Mum and Gran ran a florist
business from home. Mum, Pat
Lucas, started a retail nursery
‘Mountain Dew’ where Mitre
10 Garden Supplies now is in
Emerald. I helped Mum after
school and on weekends.
I moved to Mansfield, married
favour and plant some roses;
lots of potted ones are about
in garden centres.
Of course, with roses come
the aphids, drat them! They
reproduce with astonishing
speed, rivaling weeds, but there
is an upside to the aphid plague
and that’s the fun demolishing
them. No need to reach for
insecticides, when a good round
and had two children. Here I
had the pleasure of restoring an
overgrown, old Edna Walling
garden to its former glory. It
was planted in the early 1920s
and had lovely established trees,
dry-stone walls and paths, many
of which were covered with
inches of composted leaves and
suckering undergrowth.
The garden was three acres
and we opened it to the public
and it was also open to the ABC
garden scheme.
I have had the pleasure of
working with many nurseries
and over 10 years ago moved to
Gembrook and started my own
wholesale nursery Little Gem
Nursery & Landscaping. We
now have combined landscaping
with the nursery offering clients
an affordable garden make-over
with plants at wholesale prices.
My daughter Caitlyn has been
working in the business since
of squishing with your fingers is
all that’s needed. Greenish yellow
fingers are very ‘in’ this year!
You could use a mild, less
toxic product like pyrethrum
that kills only what it touches,
and has no residual properties
on the plants, but pyrethrum is
toxic to bees, and we all need
those. Without bees, there can
be no food crops. So
squish and enjoy!
katydids about too; big ugly
green, arrogant insects that chew
great lumps out of rose buds.
They get the stomp method, as
do snails. Maybe time hardens
my resolve with these pests, but
I refuse any use of insecticides
in the garden, while I’m perfectly
able to prowl about in the
roses, squishing
