Page 4 F RO M THE C APTAIN’ S T AB LE I'm not embarrassed to say the highlight of my year so far (both on and off the water) has been the Taree Training camp, and the Taree Summer Regatta. Thank you so much to those who travelled to Taree for making it a wonderful week, and a wildly successful one for BRC! It was particularly inspiring to see so many new members and junior rowers, either learning and improving on the water, or volunteering and having fun off it! I cannot wait to see what transpires throughout 2011. We are now in the thick of the 'business-end' of the season. With regattas almost every weekend, building to the Edward Trickett Club Championships. Best of luck to all racing members, and I am sure you will do well! We have posted many, many good results this year, and in a recent conversation with our state body Rowing NSW, the CEO commented our recent Podium finishes at the State Championships were wonderful, seeing Jesse Guilfoyle win BRC its first Under-16 State Championship in many, many years. In addition, it was especially pleasing to see our adaptive rower Steve Knott placed 2nd in the LTA single scull and 3rd in the LTA double scull. Steve will be heading to the National Championships in South Australia to combine with a rower from Melbourne Uni in the adaptive 2x. Currently we are much busier at BRC with 10 coaches on the water, and I would like to thank Keith, Jeff, Ian, Patrick, Brian, Joe, Barbara, Anne, Skelo, Allen, and Ron for their contributions so far this year. As always, many hands make light work, and if you are able to lend a hand coaching it is always appreciated! Your coaches are all working to increase your speed and enjoyment, so please work with them when they need your assistance. My only disappointment so far this year has been a disturbing trend that those who frequently use the topclass boats at the club are often least around at boat loading, unloading, packing up after regattas, or helping row boats across to regattas and participating at working bees. There is a difference between rowing clubs run like a fitness centre or gym, and our club - the biggest one is we are closer, more successful, and work together well. The reason is no-one simply pays their fees, uses the equipment, and lets someone else do all the maintenance, cleaning, etc. We are all members at BRC meaning the equipment is ours, the hall is ours, and we all pitch in equally to take care of it. Rowing is the ultimate team sport! In the past 6 months, we have re-carpeted the hall, levelled the floor and re-vinyled the kitchen, fit boards under the windows, purchased new boats, patched, repaired and painted the women's bathroom, retiled parts of the men's bathroom, installed a pump into the pontoon (after refloating it ourselves), as well as all the wonderful boat maintenance work at the working bee on the 27th of February. Much of the work has been undertaken by a core group of incredible volunteers, people TigerOars who have helped with some tasks where they could, and those who have been conspicuous by their absence. I appreciate many people lead busy lives, and some people can help out more than others as a result, but there are plenty of busy people who still find time to help - so hopefully moving forward we can all work together! This is, however, the only disappointment I have had in such a wonderful club. I was very happy to see all the good work at the working bee on the 27th, and we were richly rewarded by a great BBQ and the christening of the club's 5 new singles, two of which have been donated by very generous individuals, Antony Lighten and Timothy Wainman. It really was a great sight to see 5 sculls crowding the pontoon, all being christened at the same time! As we continue to grow, we will have more and more successes, and it is important to recognise the volunteers who help to make these things happen. I want to thank the committee for all their works, and all the wonderful volunteers who make BRC the club it is. We are fast becoming the envy of other clubs in Sydney, and going from strength to strength! Go the Tigers! Liam James Club Captain
BRC’ S M ENS EIGH T Club Captain Liam James is delighted with our recent big boat success recently commenting ‘in the last 10 years Balmain has not had a more successful eight than the crew that is training now, we have had success all the way from Melbourne’s prestigious ‘Head of the Yarra’ , Taree Summer Regatta and NSW Championships. BRC’S WO MENS EIGHT Jeff Patterson’s Women’s Squad turned some of their attention to the eight for the Edward Trickett NSW Grade Championships in April and had their first hit- out in the big boat in the Women’s D Grade Eight event at BRC’s annual point score regatta on Iron Cove Now we are challenging the dominance of larger clubs such as Sydney Rowing Club and Leichhardt Rowing Club’.
