Banaras Hindu University The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) founded by Pt. Madan Mohan Malviyaji in 1916, is one of the most prestigious Central universities in the country. It is the largest residential university in Asia. A living embodiment of Malviyaji, Dr. Anne Besant and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, this seat of learning epitomizes synthesis of ancient wisdom & modern scientific temper. The University has 123 teaching departments, many of them recognized as Centres of Excellence, 15 faculties, a Mahila Mahavidyalaya, three Institutes on Agriculture, Medical Sciences and Technology, besides a number of inter-disciplinary Centres and Schools of higher learning. Varanasi- The City of Temples Varanasi, the holy city of India, is also known by the name of Kashi and Banaras. Kashi, the city of Moksha for Hindu since centuries, is known for its fine quality silks, ‘paan’, the great seat of learning - the Banaras Hindu University and Avimukta of the ancient days. One of the seven holiest cities, Varanasi is also one of the Shakti Peeths and one of the twelve Jyotir Linga sites in India. Considered as abode of Lord Shiva, Varanasi is situated on the magnificent alluring banks of River Ganges full of aesthetic exquisiteness and tranquility. The holy city has been a symbol of spiritualism, philosophy and mysticism for thousands of years. The city is renowned for its rich tapestry of music, arts, crafts and education, Luminaries apart, it abounds in the art of silk weaving, an exotic work of art which manifests itself in precious Banarasi silk sarees and brocades which are cherished as collector’s item across the world toady. Varanasi is well connected to New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Patna by Rail and Air. Airport is about 30 km from BHU Campus. The weather during November is pleasant at 18-25 ºC. Nearby places of interest include Sarnath, which is the place of enlightenment of Lord Buddha (20 km), Ram Nagar Fort (5 km) and Vindhyachal (70 Km).
