Dr. Ferris’s publications include Matzoh Ball Gumbo:
Culinary Tales of the Jewish South (UNC Press, 2005), a
study of Jewish history, foodways, and culture in the
American South. Matzoh Ball Gumbo was nominated for the
2006 James Beard Foundation Award in the category of
“Writings on Food” and was also recognized by the
International Association of Culinary Professionals with their
2006 Jane Grigson Award for distinguished scholarship in
research and presentation. Ferris is also co-editor of Jewish
Roots in Southern Soil: A New History (University Press of
New England, 2006), an anthology of contemporary
scholarship on the Jewish South.

Community Events
Jewish Family Services administers the The Rosalyn Saltz and
Norman Seymour Pliner Scholarship Fund which provides
financial assistance to deserving, interested, and committed fulltime
students to further their post-secondary education. The
selected recipients must demonstrate commitment and
involvement in advancing Jewish women in leadership roles.
Two recipients will be chosen for the academic year 2011-2012.
Each will receive an award of $2,500. Award recipients must
reside in either North or South Carolina, meet other selection
criteria, and demonstrate financial need. The application and
information are currently available online at

Israeli Folk Dance Workshop by Two Israeli Teachers
We, in Asheville, are so fortunate to have Dany Benshalom and
Ruthy Slann lead an Israeli Folk Dance Workshop this April.
These two teachers are world-renowned and outstanding
teachers! They'll be teaching Saturday and Sunday, April 9 th and
10 th . Our Temple is the site for the "Saturday Night Party and
Teaching" and is open to Temple members for free.
Israeli Folk Dance enthusiasts from all over the southeast will be
coming to Asheville for this event. Please join us in welcoming
them and to join us for a weekend of fun, dancing, socializing,
and Jewish culture!
