Gilbert of Sempringham (1083 – 1189)
was the son of a knight, but as he was
handicapped and unable to ride a horse,
his father made him a priest and gave him
the family living. When Gilbert discovered
that some of his female parishioners were
trying to form a house of prayer, he wrote
a rule of life for them, which evolved into
the Gilbertine order, combining men and
women under different rules in the same
house. He lived to a great age and despite his disability travelled
unceasingly around the houses. As the Gilbertine order never
established itself outside England, it disappeared entirely at the
Dissolution of the Monasteries.
