hen I first started to include the
older critiques in BTM, I think I Wmentioned
that the ones I had were
from from the early to mid 1990’s. Well that is
now not the case, I’ll explain …
A few months ago Mrs Clemmit, who is a long
time fanatic of the breed, very kindly supplied
me with some older show catalogues and a
scrap book full of critique cuttings from very
old issues of Dog World. These are from even
further back than everything I already had,
maybe even a good 15 years further back, and
believe me there are some very interesting
goodies amongst them.
So what I thought I’d do was start featuring all
the older critiques etc from Mrs Clemmit, before
I get back to the 1990’s ones, - to try to keep
them in some kind of rough order. I’ll say right
off however, ‘rough order’ are the key words
here, they look to be from the same era but
there’s no chance whatsoever they’ll be featured
in exactly the right order as most have no dates
on them.
So we’ll start with a bang, and where better
than a Bull Terrier Club Trophy Show, - this is
the 1979 event with the added bonus of the
Open Show critique as well. Maybe if you go
back far enough in your own dogs’ pedigrees,
you’ll find some of those mentioned here …
Many thanks to Mrs Clemmit for her generosity,
if readers are even half as interested in Bull
Terrier history as I am, then what she has
supplied will come as an absolute treat.
Without any further ado …
Bull Terrier Club
Open & Trophy Show
1979 Event.
The Bull Terrier Club held an Open Show
at White Waltham Place. Mouths on the
whole seemed to be improving which cannot
be said for movement, which was almost
universally bad. I have always felt that a sound
temperament was essential in a Bull Terrier
and this Show and the Trophies which followed
it were remarkable in that there was not one
single argument between any two dogs in
the whole day. Obviously a very good sign.
Unusually for these times the bitches in the
show did not match the dogs.
Puppy Dog (4 Entries)
1. Miller’s Lordsfield Bombadier Of Brobar,
- Easily the star of the show for me, very
handsome white 9-month-old with tan head
patch, good mouth, lovely head with plenty of
downface, front impeccable. A bit straight in
the stifles, could have a slightly cleaner neck.
Moved well in front, less so behind. Showed
outstandingly well.
2. Larkin’s Booksale Bullace, - Very pretty little
presented white, goodish head, sound mouth.
J.B. Law (Judge)
REGENT TROPHY
I much enjoyed judging with Mrs Schuster.
We were of like mind looking for the same
virtues.
We first went over the dogs. Ch. Brobar
Backchat is a lovely type, standing still. It was
unfortunate that we were unable to assess his
movement due to lameness behind.
Ch. Kearby’s Jacobite Of Geham also has
a great head, and very short back but his
movement and mouth peg him back in this
company. Moatvale Knight Valiant has
a super head but his quarters are too light
to balance it, he lacks bend of stifle, hind
movement not good. Ch. Barrowboy Of
Badlesmere was Best Dog and BOS. He is a
well balanced dog, well put together and moved
well. Compared to his rivals his head is not
outstanding, but is still a good strong head with
a good eye and perfect mouth.
I have never seen a better line-up in depth than
the bitches. We had no hesitation in giving the
Regent Trophy to Harpers Holiday, a quality,
beautifully balanced girl, lovely classical head,
good neck and front, short back, very good
