Colonial activities for Lotspeich fifth graders included forging dinner triangles with a blacksmith, preparing a colonial dinner, dyeing<br />

and weaving the wool of the fifth grade sheep, Lotsheep and Lana, and participating in colonial amusements and activities.<br />

Students in sixth grade science classes and ninth grade biology<br />

classes got hands-on experience in their study of the circulatory<br />

and respiratory systems when Dr. Jill Russsell and Dr.<br />

Dave Russell demonstrated the inner workings of the hearts<br />

and lungs of a pig and cow.<br />

Doherty Unit III students participated in (at left) a simulation of immigrants coming through Ellis<br />

Island in 1900 and (above) the Second Continental Congress’ debate about and signing of the<br />

Declaration of Independence.<br />

In addition to being ornithologists and bird banders, Jill<br />

Russell, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of biology at the College<br />

of Mt. St. Joseph, and Dave Russell, Ph.D. is a lecturer in<br />

molecular systematics, entomology, and ornithology at Miami<br />

University.
