These freemen both wear the tunic, trousers and turnshoes that were the basic male clothing throughout<br />
northern Europe in the tenth and eleventh centuries. They are lightly armed with the wealthier Karl<br />
wearing a helm and carrying a shield. He also has a wood axe which he could use for fighting in addition<br />
to wood-chopping.<br />
