LONG-TIME ELWOOD BUSINESSMAN DIES AT THE AGE OF 97 George Perry Mangas, 97, a long-time Elwood businessman died Tuesday at St. Vincent Elwood Mercy Hospital. He immigrated to the United States in 1922. He was born February 14,1903, in Bordonia, Greece, a tiny mountain village. He was the son ofPerry and Theresa (Economakis) Mangas. George and his brother, Jack, immigrated to the United States as teenagers and came to Elwood in the early 1920's. George and Jack opened the Mangas' Sweet Shoppe at 110 S. Anderson St. which operated under the Mangas brothers from 1928 until 1948. The Sweet Shoppe was a hugh success and the family felt there was a market for a full-scale restaurant. The result was the Mangas Cafeteria that opened at Main and Anderson streets. The cafeteria was open from 1941 through the 1980's. Every serviceman was served a free meal at Mangas Cafeteria. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Theresa Mangas ofElwood and Martha Perdikis ofLeawood, Kansas. He has two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Pota Economakis and Stamata Sakelarakos; and brothers, Jack and Louis Mangas. Funeral services were held at the Jackley-Landrum Funeral Home with the Rev. Anastaslos Gounaris officiating. Burial was in the Elwood City Cemetery. We have started the reading ofthe Elwood City Cemetery. We need VOLUNTEERS for this project. If you can help please call Ranny Simmons or Linda Ead. The Sunset Memorial Cemetery reading is complete. We are waiting for information on the history ofthe cemetery. We hope to have this ready to print in book form before the end ofthis year.
