The definition of the word is determined by it’s usage in its context rather than the sum of all of it’s usages elsewhere. John the Baptist When John the Baptist preached “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand (Mt. 3:2), he meant changing your thinking from trusting your merit before God to trusting the Messiah for the remission of sins. Jesus When Jesus said, “For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance” (Mt. 9:13), He meant changing your mind from trusting yourself that you are righteous to recognizing you need of a savior and trusting Him. When Jesus said that if the mighty works which he did in Jewish cities had been done in Gentiles cities (Mt. 11:20-22, Lk. 10:13. See also Mt. 12:38), would have repented, He meant they would have changed their minds about Him and would have trusted Him. When Jesus said if you do not repent, you will perish (Lk. 13:1-2, 4), He meant change your mind about who you are. You are a sinner who needs a savior. When Jesus said that unlike the Pharisees, there is joy in heaven over those who repent (Lk. 15:7, 10), He meant referred to a changing of mind from a self-righteous attitude that does not see a need for God’s mercy to an attitude of realizing one’s sinfulness and, therefore, a need for God’s forgiveness. When Jesus said that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations (Lk. 24:47), He meant that they were to change their minds about Him in order to be forgiven. When Jesus said that if a sinning brother sins against you and repents, forgive him (Lk. 17:3-4). He meant the repentant person had changed his mind about he had done. 50
