"Wednesday was a gala day at
Xamehameha School. The boys
young and old were on exhibition,
aud acquitttd themselves in
a way that did crtdit to them and
their teachers, but still more to
the founder of the school.
At 1:30 pm. the schools were
thrown open for the inspection of
the visitors. The point of greatest
interest seemed to be in the workshops,
where the students spend
some hours a day. Here they are
taught the rudiments, and, in
many cases, the higher brauches
of several different trades, such as
carpentry, printing, blacksmithing,
tailoring aud turning. Each of
these was in full running
order "Wednesday, and it was a sight
of great interest to the many to see
the boys working.
In one of the rooms of tbe college
building wtre exhibited a
number of siiecimtiis of the bovs'
Ekiil in the workshops. One of the
beat of these was a chair and table
made of highly polished native
Tvoods. The turning and finishing
would not disgrace the fintst. cabinetmaker
in the islauds. There
were also some che- - ker-bard- the
"Etliares of which were of different
cjortd woods, each block fitted to
nicety, and with a fancy border
n inlaid woods; there was iron
4 fitwork, made in the machine
rfDps ; there was a brass vacuum
wrap, turned Dy me more aa-jancscholars.
The tailors
department was represented by a
full uniform made by the boys,
and to all appearances it was a
very well made suit of clothes.
Many other things rtquiring a
good rutchaiiical knowledge were
on exhibition, and wt-r- e closely
inspected by those present.
At 2 o'clutk, tbr visitors were
invited into Bishop Hall, to listen
to the exTcis-s- . The smaller
boys of tbe preparatory department
bad the most to do, and
acquitted themselves remarkably
well. Several of the older scholars
recited, and the programme was
interspersed with song? by tbe glee
club. The f4lowittg was the -e
When the above programme had
been gone through witb, the visitors
wandered around the grounds
or visited the Bishop Museum,
which was specially opened for the
day, when two companies of the
boys gave a battalion drill, marching
and counter-marchin- g for nearly
Jialf an hour, during which the
school band, under the leadership
of Professor Bcrger played. The
commencement txerciss will take
place at Kawaiahao Church this
THINGS THEOSOPHICAL.
mi JgJMBMgjHBTSri
The Class is Nearly Through the
Ocean of Them.
The clasl n Theosophy has kept
up very assia:,,usl its work.
meetingevery Sunday Morning, so
that it is expected to finu"0 tno
present text book, Judge's "Oceal1
of Theosophy," in the next two
meetings. The class work will
thtn be temporarily suspended
until after the arrival of an eminent
Theosophical lecturer, Mrs.
M. Thirds of Chicago, who is expected
on the next Austra ia. Details
of the projected lrcturts will
be made public in due time, but
from the reputation of the lecturer,
it can be said that a rare
treat is in store for all who may be
interested in Theosophy iu this
torcn. The most earnest students
of the class have taken steps for
the formation here of a branch of
the Theosophical Society, to be
called the Aloha Branch. The
Theosophical libary continues to
improve, and the followiug works
have leen received by late mails :
C. F. Wright' Outline of Modern
Theosophy; Waterdale'a Researches
on Dynamics ; Dr. J. D.
Buck's Studv of Man aud Wav to
Health; J.W. Brodie Innes, The
True Church of Christ ; Fr. Arun-dal- e,
The Idea of Rebirth ; J. Nia-nian-d,
Common to Christianity and Theosophy
; Answered Queries ; The
Path for 1S94; Borderland for
April ; The Golden Stairs and
Wonder Light, tales for children.
In connection with the Theosophical
library it must be noticed
that an improvement in its management
has been realized, by the
fact that, instead of being opened
only a couple of hours three times
a week, access to it can now be obtained
at any time by applying to
