household battery recycling
Household or dry-cell batteries are those
batteries that we use in everyday items such as
radios, cameras and children’s toys.
Batteries contain metals such as zinc, steel
and manganese, when placed in landfill these
metals are lost and can not be recovered. The
metals are made from natural resources which
are limited.
Recycling batteries enables the metals to
be recovered and turned into new products,
extending the life of the limited resources.
In landfill, the casings of batteries disintegrate,
metals and chemicals used within the battery
can leach into the surrounding environment.
In order to protect the environment and save
precious resources it is important to ensure that
dry-cell batteries are disposed of correctly and
not placed in household bins.

What type of batteries are accepted?
AA and AAA (single use & rechargeable batteries)
C & D size batteries
Button batteries (eg. watch batteries)
9V batteries
6V batteries (eg. torch batteries)
benefits of recycling batteries
Household dry-cell batteries contain metals such
as zinc, manganese and steel which, like many
natural resources are found in a limited supply.
Separating batteries and recycling them reduces
the incidence of these valuable metals becoming
destined to landfill.
how are batteries recycled?
Dry-cell batteries are transported for reprocessing
at a specialised facility in New South Wales,
where battery components are recycled into
new products such as street lights, steel frames
and car parts.
What are recycled batteries made into?
Zinc Galvanising (eg. street lights)
Manganese New batteries and steel alloys
Steel New steel products (eg. rainwater tanks)
