Tro-Val Update
Happy 2013 and welcome back! I hope everyone had a happy and restful holiday season!
The year is going by very quickly and as we return from our Christmas break, students are preparing for final
exams in some courses and midterm exams in others and for our grade 12 students – diploma exams. There is
an exam schedule for high school students later in the newsletter as well as on our website so you can see
when your child is writing exams. Students in junior high classes will have their midterms scheduled by their
teachers. The second semester begins February 1. With the second semester come new courses for many of our
high school students and a change in option classes for some junior high students. There are also some changes
in teaching assignments that will be shared in next month’s newsletter.
There is lots of activity onsite where the modernization is taking place. I was lucky enough to see photos of the
interior of the building and a great deal of demolition has taken place. In some areas it is difficult to recognize
the space. The contractor tells us that activity will increase in the next few months and that they still feel the
project is on schedule. Fences have been put up around the construction site as it is very important that no
one has access due to the type of work being done. We will be reminding students about the meaning of a
construction fence and we ask you do the same at home.
We continue to carry on business in our temporary locations – it feels like home now so we don’t think about it
as ‘temporary’ anymore. We have managed to deal with Old Man Winter on a couple of occasions and find it
quite cozy within the buildings. Our challenges arise as we move between buildings. We do encourage
students to wear jackets as they move from building to building and most teachers will accommodate a jacket
on the back of the chair during class time. We don’t want the jackets to become an excuse for being late for
class. The concept of layering clothing makes sense now especially – a hoodie over a t-shirt can solve the
jacket issue if moving between buildings. All students in Phys Ed class require appropriate outdoor clothing,
however, since most days are outdoor classes.
That’s all for now. Until next month…..
Family Literacy Day—January 25, 2013
Our school is promoting Family Literacy for the entire month of January.
The kindergarten through Grade 6 students will be encouraged to read at home. Students
who have read at home will submit their reading minutes for the month of January. They will
submit a coupon. At the end of the month, names will be drawn and these students will enjoy a
pizza lunch sponsored by KALS (Kneehill Adult Learning Society).
January and it’s cold days makes a great time to enjoy reading a book.
FOOD BANK COLLECTION…..
Collection boxes for the local Food Bank were
set up in both campuses for the month of
December. A lot of non perishable food items
were generously donated by our students and
their families. We are very proud of our student’s
compassion and kindness for those less
fortunate members of our community especially
during this holiday season.
Parent council is doing a holiday fundraiser because the market was the atrocious ice storm day.
Though we “plowed” through, we have a large shortfall. We appreciate all you did to support our
market but the results are completely out of our hands.
Parent council has kept all regular support areas from previous years, including but not limited to
drama & scholarships to agendas, sports provincials fees, & field trips, PLUS extended sizeable
financial support to the Phys Ed Program for things like bussing, swimming, skating, curling etc.,
that our students are doing in lieu of having a gymnasium for their PE classes.
This is where we all come in, students, K-12 have the opportunity to do help us out by selling
MOM‘s PANTRY ITEMS from December 20 to January 20. Due in office Monday January 21.
Extra order forms will be available at both Campuses. There is an online link for online ordering at
www.momspantry.ca/fundraising and our order code is 94701 and our group password is: 34311
Your set up is simple. You set up a new personal account for yourself, then log-in with your new
personal info, go to fundraising, and log-in with the group details and ….
VOILA… YOU ARE IN! EASY BREEZY!
Fundraising with Tro Val Parent Council is a WIN—WIN.
WIN a family MYSTERY PRIZE to the family with the most dollars sold
The class with the highest combined sales (family sales count in each class ie your family sold
$100 total, each of your kids counts it towards the contest) WINS a PIZZA PARTY!
Thanks in advance for all your support with this greatly needed and unexpected fundraiser.
Message from Parent Council Anti-Bullying Committee...
Happy New Year!! We are looking forward to a productive and proactive year for 2013! Our Anti-Bullying wall is up and
running and our youth are doing a wonderful job of decorating! We are recognizing two individuals for the month of December
for their choice to Stand Up. It takes courage to do the right thing sometimes, and these individuals displayed not only
courage, but strength in character as well. We are proud of you! It is with great pleasure that SHAKERS and the Anti-
Bullying Committee award these day passes to Dakota Wohl and Cole Adam.
The new year also brings new amendments to our Education Act—specifically Bill 3. The Parent Council is pleased to
inform you that Mrs. Debbie Barkman will be on hand at the January Parent Council Meeting to talk about the amendment
(specifically) Part 3; Responsibilities and Dispute Resolution. Division 1 Responsibilities: 31) Student responsibilities; 32)
Parent responsibilities … and what it means to us as parents and as students. We also welcome Dr. Jaiyesimi who will be
speaking about the negative impact ‘bullying’ has on the community as a whole, and the disastrous effect it has on our
youth. We encourage you to attend the January 28 meeting of the Parent Council.
Parent Tip: Spotting Signs of Trouble: Bullying can take on many forms, including repeated verbal and physical harassment,
social exclusion, or even online acts of harm—all of which can have devastating effects on a child. Though your
tween or teen may not open up to you about being a victim of bullying, feeling depressed or struggling socially, there are
some tell-tale signs to look for: Frequent Absences: Faking illness or using excuses can be a sign things are not okay.
Even the route taken to school can raise a red flag, since your child may take a longer one to avoid danger. Cyber-bullying:
Modern bullying isn’t limited to schoolyards. Tweens and teens can be at home on their computer or cellular phone and
receive hateful messages or even photos and videos posted online. Monitor your child’s internet use by ‘friending’ them on
social medial sites and checking text activity from time to time. Social struggles: An active social life is a key part of childhood.
If your child is avoiding events, it could point to a larger issue. For those of you who have children on Facebook you
may find this site helpful. http://2passthetorch.com/2009/11/23facebook-contract-for-parents-of-teens/ (copy and paste this
A well-known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200 he asked, “Who would like this $20
bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.”
He proceeded to crumple up the $20 bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air. “Well,” he
replied. “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it
up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.
“My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it
did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt
by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We may feel as though we are worthless. But no
matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value.
Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not
in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE.
