Reconnect with Harford:
By Alexa Geuss
From student to employee and
from a mom to well known author,
Jamie Kleman developed the art
of storytelling through words.
Kleman, a graduate of Bel Air
High School, published her first
children’s book in 2005, and helped
write the score for the hit musical
It’s Not Mean to Be Green in 2008.
Born and raised in Bel Air,
Maryland, Kleman went to Harford
Community College for one year and
transferred to Salisbury University.
“I always enjoyed writing, and
knew that was what I wanted
to do, but I figured I would
give it a year and explore
other options,” Kleman states.
After graduating from Salisbury
in 1994, Kleman worked at MBNA.
In 1995, she had her daughter,
Abby, and decided to stay home
Time to weigh-in! HCC
employees will challenge
themselves to lose weight in
the Largest Loser competition
this semester. They will be
head-to-head in this weight
loss competition for multiple
prizes, while dropping a
few pounds in the process.
The contest is a virtual
equivalent to the Biggest Loser
on television. Teams of six HCC
employees will compete to
lose the most weight over the
course of six weeks. There will
be four weigh-ins throughout
the six week span from
January 26 through March 16.
At the first weigh-in, the teams
will know what their group weight
is, and the subsequent weighins
will be the true tests. The
team with the highest percent
of weight loss will be rewarded
Alum Pursues Passion, Becomes Author
to write. Kleman’s first published
book, Uncovered, was inspired by
a trip she took with her daughter
to New York. It is a story about
looking around and taking in
everything that you see, the
big things and the small things.
It’s Not Mean to Be Green is
Kleman’s most successful short
story, which was chosen to be
performed as a musical. The
musical was recently staged
in the Amoss Center at HCC.
“I was driving with my son, and
noticed all the signs saying ‘Go
Green,’ and wondered if kids knew
what that meant,” informs Kleman.
It’s Not Mean to Be Green
is a story about a young boy’s
mental journey with the phrase
“Go Green.” On the back of the
book, it highlights, “Going Green
has never been so important,
but does that mean the same
thing to all of us? Turn the pages
and learn how one little boy
goes from dreaming of green
witches, monsters, and dragons,
to learning how we can all keep
Mother Earth from feeling blue.”
Kleman made characters that
children already knew of and related
them to the phrase “going green.”
“It was really fun because I
used Frankenstein for recycling
because of all his different
parts,” Kleman expresses.
Kleman believes that if you have
a passion you should follow it.
“I’m a huge fan of mentors and
internships,” shares Kleman, “If
you have a passion, develop
relationships with advisors and
teachers with that same passion.”
every faculty member who
will be put into a raffle for an iPad.
The VPAA faculty already
Anderson-Himmelspach
comments, “Ultimately, we are
trying to shed a few pounds in
a fun, safe, and team building
environment. It will help build
morale and camaraderie in the
VPAA. Winning an iPad would
be pretty awesome, too.”
On March 16, the staff will
be slimmer, there will be a
fun along the way. So you
have to ask yourself, is there
