National Commander candidate visits NH Legions

Fang Wong, the lead candidate for next
year’s National American Legion Commander,
paid a visit to New Hampshire
over the weekend of November 19-21, 2010,
accompanied by his wife, Barbara Wong.
Retired from the Army as a Warrant Officer,
his Post is in Chinatown, Manhattan, NY.

Excitement is in the air as the holidays approach
at the Hillsboro House Nursing Home. We have
just fi nished decorating our Christmas Trees and
making Gingerbread Houses. According to Angus
the dog, the Gingerbread houses are very beautiful
and tasty too!
We have a new pet at the Hillsboro House. His
name is Buster the Cat and he is extremely aff ectionate.
He is perfectly content to spend most of his days
lounging around in Ken Grant’s room sleeping on
the sunny windowsill. Lately, however, he has shown
some interest in Billy the Bird in the Solarium. We’ll
have to see how that friendship works out!
Th ere have been some wonderful visitors
stopping by to sing Christmas Carols and volunteer
their time. A special thank you to Linda Brake’s Girl
Scout troop for the wonderful ornaments made for
the residents! We are expecting some more visits
from school children and a group of piano students
with Barbara Daley later this month.
Last month, we ventured out in the cold to see
“A Christmas Carol, the Musical” in Concord. I
criss-crossed the state visiting 12 Posts, one
District and the Nashua Armory.
One of the highlights of his trip was
witnessing the presentation of 1000 personalized
Christmas cards to Paul Moore,
co-founder of Moore-Mart at the armory
in Nashua. These cards were designed,
printed and written by inmates at the State
Prison in Berlin, NH and had been given
to Jack Neylon on one of his visits there.
Moore-Mart regularly ships packages to
service personnel around the world and
these cards were going to be included in

think we all agree the acting was superb and the
singing was delightful. We would like to thank
Brenda and Kayleen for their time and big cars to get
everyone there.
Th is year at the Hillsboro House, we are starting
a new tradition of having a Holiday party for residents
and staff in place of the Open House. Pianist
Robert Kelly will be joining us for this festive occasion
to play the residents’ favorite Christmas classics.

Ruth Jones 25th and Cliff Blanchard 31st. Th e staff
and residents at the Hillsboro House would like to
wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year!

the shipment leaving in December for Iraq
and Afghanistan.
Wong not only visited NH Posts but
also “broke bread” with the Post members,
their wives and families. He had a chance
to meet the various Post Commanders and
listen to their concerns and offer some sage
advice based upon his experience.
He mentioned that prior to coming to
NH, he had visited 31 different states and
found that NH was one of the most cordial
and hospitable places; he felt very comfortable
on this visit.
The American Legion has 55 Departments
in the 50 states, the District of
Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto
Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines,
consisting of 2.5 million members.
