Of <strong>the</strong> eight children that were <strong>the</strong> fruit <strong>of</strong> this<br />

marriage, — six sons and two daughters, — four (Stephen,<br />

Adam, Deane, Samuel) reached maturity, and<br />

came to New England ; note <strong>of</strong> whose history, since<br />

it must be <strong>the</strong> briefest,<br />

Stephen served <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts <strong>Colony</strong><br />

in im-<br />

portant <strong>of</strong>fices, but returned to <strong>the</strong> old country at <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolution, where he was one <strong>of</strong> Cromwell's<br />

colonels and member <strong>of</strong> Parliament. Adam<br />

died at Boston in early manhood. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Winthrop</strong>,<br />

LL.D., whose long and distinguished service <strong>of</strong><br />

Harvard University, in <strong>the</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and<br />

Natural Philosophy, terminated during<br />

our War <strong>of</strong><br />

Independence, was his grandson. Deane lived in<br />

honour in <strong>the</strong> colony to an advanced age. From him<br />

<strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winthrop</strong>, where his residence was, takes<br />

its name. Samuel ultimately settled in <strong>the</strong> island <strong>of</strong><br />

Antigua, where he was deputy-governor. The late<br />

Lord Lyons, British minister to <strong>the</strong> United States dur-<br />

ing our civil war, was his descendant, as is <strong>the</strong> present<br />

Duke <strong>of</strong> Newcastle.<br />

While <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first decade <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winthrop</strong>'s manhood<br />

<strong>the</strong> record, as we have said, is very slight, <strong>the</strong>nce<br />

onward, from his letters principally, its occupations<br />

and main incidents are traceable. He passed much<br />

<strong>of</strong> his time in London and on circuit, on his pr<strong>of</strong>es-<br />

sional business, which was growing and pr<strong>of</strong>itable.<br />
