Thirteen-year old<br />

Shade-Rose Brophy<br />

has cleaned up more<br />

than six awards at <strong>the</strong><br />

recent Taranaki<br />

Speech <strong>and</strong> Drama<br />

Festival competitions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> competition that was held in July at <strong>the</strong> TSB Showplace was<br />

<strong>the</strong> 56th annual competition that encourages young competitors<br />

to contest highly acclaimed speech awards. Shade-Rose was<br />

awarded first place in <strong>the</strong> Under 14 years Speech Improvisation <strong>and</strong><br />

first in <strong>the</strong> Under 14 years Character Sketch. Shade-Rose’s character<br />

sketch was about a little girl begging for a doll <strong>and</strong> was acted out<br />

using Cockney rhyming slang. Shade-Rose has been taking speech<br />

lessons from <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> five <strong>and</strong> has always been keen to compete<br />

in competitions since she was six years old, says her mo<strong>the</strong>r Kathleen<br />

Brophy. Popular speech <strong>and</strong> drama teacher Carol Julian from Okato<br />

has been traveling to teach Shade-Rose who lives on Oakura’s<br />

Ply<strong>mouth</strong> Road. O<strong>the</strong>r titles that Shade-Rose won at this year’s<br />

competitions included; Very Highly Commended Light Verse,<br />

Highly Commended Memorised Prose, 3rd Poem by NZ Author,<br />

3rd Prepared Speech; “Diary <strong>of</strong> Anne Frank”. Shade-Rose’s o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

hobbies include surfing <strong>and</strong> touch rugby, <strong>and</strong> oneday she hopes<br />

to be a presenter or actor on TV.
