AUCTIONEER’S FOREWORD
The Directors of Redgate Farm Ltd have decided to sell Redgate Farm situated on the fens
at Guyhirn, Cambridgeshire and as a consequence their entire herd of pedigree and
commercial milk recorded Holstein dairy cattle is to be dispersed at Beeston Castle
Auction on Tuesday, 5 th March.
The sale is extensive and numbers some 400 head of which there are 283 members of the
milking portion, 1 pure Irish Friesian bull, 6 incalf heifers and 110 maiden heifers and
calves. The reason there are hardly any incalf heifers is that the owners had a change in
policy last year and sold all their maiden heifers through Beeston last Spring.
The herd follows an all year round calving pattern with no particular bias to any period of
the year although it should be noted that over 100 animals have calved since December.
It is also very young with some 210 head milking with their third or younger lactations
including 58 milking heifers and 94 second calvers.
The herd is managed well with a totally commercial approach; it is fed a full TMR ration
based on grass and maize with no feeding in the parlour where they are milked twice
daily. In winter the cows are housed in sand bedded cubicles. The most recent rolling herd
average is 9127 kg. 4.16% butterfat 3.16% protein with a calving interval of 422. At the
last recording the cell count average for the whole herd was 196.
In the past cows had been purchased from many of the leading dispersal sales of the
breed, often at high prices. More recently a whole herd, the property of one of the
company’s directors, was purchased from County Cork to increase production. The main
sires are Matson, Reece, Homestead, Outside, Moviestar, Baxter and Shottle.
This is the first big dispersal of the year and features genuine cattle that on the whole
display width and strength, good udders, legs and feet and sound overall conformation.
Every effort should be made to attend this sale by all those seeking genuine cattle that
should go and perform well wherever they go.
SPECIAL NOTES:
The herd resides in a 4 year testing parish for TB and is screened for Johne’s Disease. It is
vaccinated for BVD, IBR and Leptospirosis with boosters due this Spring.
