Regional variations in the sex ratio by age group are<br />
displayed in Table 3. The variations may be attributed<br />
to various factors such as the sex ratio at birth,<br />
mortality differentials, and sex-selectivity in migration.<br />
For example, the preponderance of males in in-migration<br />
streams to Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, and the two<br />
Mindanao regions have resulted in sex ratios well above<br />
1000. It is believed that the disappearance of frontier<br />
areas and the easing up of migratory movements have<br />
caused a gradual decline in the sex ratios. The slight<br />
excess of males in the Eastern Visayas region may be<br />
partly due to the larger number of females out-migrating<br />
from the area.<br />

On the other hand, the low sex ratios in the other<br />
regions have been due to predominantly male outmigration,<br />
except Metropolitan Manila and Southern<br />
Luzon, where an increasing number of young female<br />
in-migrants have been recorded (note the very low sex<br />
ratios in the age group 15-29).<br />
