In the late 1880 s Dominick Carey designed Maple Wood Stock Farm to satisfy his passion for raising<br />

race horses He built his horse training track facility on the part <strong>of</strong> the Gleeson family land holdings that<br />

are now the Astorhurst restaurant and golf course Cazey sblueprint <strong>of</strong>Maple Wood Stock Farm not<br />

only illustrates the horse facility but shows the original path <strong>of</strong> Tinker<br />

sCreek and <strong>Egypt</strong><br />

<strong>Dunham</strong> <strong>Road</strong> before they were rerouted by the County in 1907 and the Edmond<br />

Gleeson grave site Carey<br />

THE COMSTOCK GLEESON CAREY ASTORHLJRST STORY<br />

The Astorhutst land is the location <strong>of</strong> the first settlement in Bedford Township This was first site cleared<br />

by settlers for their cabin and farm<br />

COMSTOCKS AND GLEESONS<br />

Stephen and Julia Comstock bought land from the Connecticut Land Company along that section <strong>of</strong><br />

Tinker sCreek <strong>Road</strong> When their daughter Sarah was bom in 1815 she became the first child bom <strong>of</strong><br />

settlers in Bedford Township<br />

In 1814 Moses and Polly Gleeson settled on land bordering the Comstock property The Gleeson grist<br />

mill was one <strong>of</strong> the principal grist mills in the township Remains <strong>of</strong>the grist millcan still be seen by the<br />

Astorhurst Restaurant<br />

Gleeson sson Edmond marred the Comstock daughter Charlotte The<br />

young couple was given aparcel <strong>of</strong>landfrom their parents properties along Tinker s Creek <strong>Road</strong> Later they inherited a lot <strong>of</strong> acreage<br />

along both sides <strong>Egypt</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Dunham</strong> <strong>Road</strong> including and abutting the Astorhurst The grave <strong>of</strong><br />

Edmond Gleeson who died iri 1854 is perched on <strong>Egypt</strong> Mound along with remnants <strong>of</strong> his gravestone<br />

and iron fencing <strong>Egypt</strong> Mound is nowpart <strong>of</strong>the Cuyahoga Valley National Park land<br />
