November 4, 2012 Page 6 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics ©2004 Catholic Answers To conclude the Faithful Citizenship series here are some guidelines from the Voter’s Guide for Serous Catholics: For each office, first determine how each candidate stands on each of the five non-negotiable issues. The non-negotiable issues are abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, and same-gender “marriage.” These are intrinsically evil and must never be promoted by the law. Eliminate from consideration candidates who are wrong on any of the nonnegotiable issues. No matter how right they may be on other issues, they should be considered disqualified if they are wrong on even one of the nonnegotiables. Choose from among the remaining candidates, based on your assessment of each candidate's views on other, lesser issues. Do not base your vote on your political party affiliation, your earlier voting habits, or your family's voting tradition. You need to look at each candidate as an individual. This means that you may end up casting votes for candidates from more than one party. Do not cast your vote based on candidates’ appearance, personality, or “media savvy.” Do not vote for candidates simply because they declare themselves to be Catholic. Unfortunately, many self-described Catholic candidates reject basic Catholic moral teaching. Do not choose among candidates based on "What's in it for me?" Make your decision based on which candidates seem most likely to promote the common good, even if you will not benefit directly or immediately from the legislation they propose. Do not reward with your vote candidates who are right on lesser issues but who are wrong on key moral issues. Candidates need to learn that being wrong on even one of the non-negotiable issues is enough to exclude them from consideration. In some political races, each candidate takes a wrong position on one or more of the five non-negotiables. In such a case you may vote for the candidate who takes the fewest such positions or who seems least likely to be able to advance immoral legislation or you may choose to vote for no one. Conscience is like an alarm. It warns you when you are about to do something wrong. It does not itself determine what is right or wrong. For your conscience to work properly, it must be properly informed-that is, you must inform yourself about what is right and what is wrong. Only then will your conscience be a trusted guide. Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Saturday, November 10 All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the STM Knights of Columbus Council 5530 Free Throw Basketball Championship on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m.-12 noon, in the STM School Gym. Registration is 9 — 9:30 a.m. All boys and girls 10 to 14 are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation, and the winner of each division is eligible to move up to the Division and State Competition. High school-age athletes should check with their school athletic director or athletic association regarding possible eligibility conflicts.
