NARRATIVE REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL SIMPOSIUM PERSPECTIVES ON
GLOBAL WARMING AND LIVESTOCK IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES OF
LATINAMERICA

1. Appetizer
Livestock contribute to global warming worldwide. As well, the negative impact of global
warming will be more pronounced on livestock of small producers in developing countries. This
situation requires mitigation and adaptation strategies that will consider biological, economic
and social aspects. This topics was included in this “Global warming and livestock” symposium.
The international symposium was conducted as requested by DDRN with participation of
international and national speakers. Support from the Doctoral Programs of our University
(Animal Science/Economy of natural resources) was a key element for completing it
adequately with regards to both economic and technical aspects of the event.
2. Objectives of the Symposium
• Review information about the linkage between Global warming and livestock in
different countries of Latin America.
• To define the more promising strategies for mitigation and adaptation of the effects of
global warming on livestock.
3. Key issues from presentations
Under the context of Latin‐American the following were the main issues.
‐ Difficulties to estimate of methane and nitrous oxide emissions from livestock
‐ Relevance of Life cycle assessment of dairy and meat production
‐ Actual knowledge and practices of different strategies for reduction of emissions from
livestock systems
‐ Implementation of Agro forestry systems to improve sustainability of cattle production
‐ Estimates on the effects of global warming on livestock
‐ Mitigation and adaptation strategies to overcome the impact of global warming on
livestock

‐ Economic impact of global warming on livestock and agriculture
‐ Carbon markets and environmental improvement of livestock production.
4. Summary of conclusions
Under the context of Latin‐American the following were the main conclusions:
‐ There are variable levels of precision on estimates of methane and nitrous oxide
emissions from livestock in Latin‐American. Specific research is needed in order to
improve precision based on the characteristics of prevalent livestock systems in the
area.
‐ Approaches like Life Cycle Assessment have been little applied in livestock system
which will improve our understanding of emissions from those systems.
‐ Different strategies are available for reducing emission from livestock, which will need
to be considered specifically to each site based on economic and biological aspects.
‐ Adaptation and mitigation interventions for the effect of global warming on livestock
require better support from research to be effective and viable.
5. Issues for follow up
National: The symposium allowed interaction about staff of universities; NG0s and
government interested on the relation of global warming and livestock. This will need to be
strengthened around specific projects.
International: Interaction among researchers from different countries has been the beginning
point for further research/development activities. Initial planning for a web international short
course on “Livestock and global warming” was discussed.
