The U,S. Supreme Court Jan, 14 struck a Mow
to freedom of speech among public school
students whan, by a M decision, it ruled school
administrators can censor school newspapers by
deleting material considered inappropriate.
Because of its broad implications to severely
muzzle the opinions and journalistic expression
of young people, we must agree with the dissenting
opinion, expressed by Justice William Brennan
Jr., which refers to the decision as approving
"brutal censorship" and "thought control
in the high school."
Since the primary function of any administrator
is to keep hit ship on course, any action
which threatens to rock the boat is
automatically suspect. It is not unusual, for
example, for administrators to engage in double
talk to maintain smooth sailing as usual.
Now, under Supreme Court license, school administrators
everywhere have the opportunity to
find any ripple out of the norm as "inappropriate,"
rendering freedom of speech a
mockery for young people who are supposed to
be learning the principles of democracy and good
citizenship.
We earnestly call upon school administrators
within earshot to continue to prudently exercise
their authority. Similarly, we beseech student
journalists to practice common sense and decency!
Locally, the student newspapers of Ocean i
and Mainland Regional high schools are award*
winning publications, It is unfortunate that a
Supreme Court decision has the potential of
doing more harm than good here.
