Army April 25, 2013
New brigade structure close
The new armoured cavalry regiment design will be trialled during Exercise Hamel under Plan Beersheba
THE Army’s taking another step
closer to the multi-role combat brigades
(MCB) envisioned under Plan
Beersheba with preparations for
Exercise Hamel 2013.
Conducted in conjunction with
Exercise Talisman Sabre 2013, Ex
Hamel will support a field trial of the
new armoured cavalry regiment (ACR)
design and the evolving concept of
employment for the MCB being adopted
across 1 Bde, 3 Bde and 7 Bde over
the coming years.
According to Army’s Modernisation
and Strategic Plans Division (MSP-A),
an ACR based on 1 Bde units will be
tested and evaluated during high-end
war fighting in a near-peer threat environment
– that is, against a conventional
military force of similar capability.
Army’s transition from its current
organisation to three MCBs is expected
to improve combined-arms capabilities
across the force and support more
effective force generation for
operations.
MSP-A has outlined that each new
brigade will have specialist mounted
and dismounted combat capabilities,
along with the requisite combat support
and combat service support.
To support these changes, an initial
concept of employment detailing the
structure, roles and methods of operation
of the MCB and its organic units
has been developed.
It describes the outputs expected
at each stage of the force generation
cycle and the contingency forces that
are expected to be generated. MSP-A
hopes the concept will help soldiers
understand how they can expect to be
employed in future.
The ACR, with Abrams tanks,
ASLAVS and M113 APCs, provides
the capability to locate, dislocate, disrupt
and destroy an enemy with mounted
offensive, defensive, reconnaissance
and security operations. It also provides
close combat lift for the fighting
elements of the standard infantry bat-
talion and supporting capabilities.
Testing the optimum organisational
design is essential to the ACR being
an effective, sustainable and affordable
part of the MCB, according to MSP-A.
BAE Systems provides
aviation tech training
BAE Systems will provide aviation
technical training for the ADF under a
$107 million five-year contract signed this
month.
Defence Materiel Minister Mike Kelly
announced the new collaboration, saying
BAE Systems would train about 900 students
annually at the School of Technical
Training at RAAF Base Wagga, in NSW.
“The contract is for initial training
for technicians and maintainers for all
aviation-related trades, and a range of
postgraduate courses, for aircraft and helicopters
operated by Army, Navy and Air
Force,” Dr Kelly said.
“The design of the new contract provides
BAE with a high level of autonomy
and responsibility for the delivery of
the training.
Evaluation Office, will help MSP-A
develop the structures to be raised in
1 Bde, 3 Bde and 7 Bde in coming
years.
MSP-A encourages all exercise
participants to contribute by providing
feedback during the trial.
