The cafeteria is dark, with only
candles lighting up the room.
The spotlight turns on, and the
audience looks towards the stage.
At that moment anything can
happen. Three. Two. One. Take
a deep breath; it’s your turn to
perform now. Go.
Friday, Oct. 15 2010, was
Queen of Peace high school’s
first ever Coffee House event.
Through a joint effort between
senior, BriElle Munizzi, and
the choral teacher, Ms. Bridget
Kancler, this event became a
reality. Working together, BriElle
brought up the idea and Ms. Kancler
figured out how to make the
event happen. The Coffee House
event which will occur about every
month, will support the Peace
Theater Company (PTC). All
money raised by the $2.00 admission
fee will go directly back to
PTC to help support the club and
their activities.
So what exactly is a Coffee
House? A coffee house is
a gathering for people to come
and show others their talents.
Whether through music, poetry,
skits, or short stories, the coffee
house gives participants the opportunity
to express themselves
and/or see the talents of other
people. All Coffee House events
are open to everyone to participate
not just those in the Mosaic
(Queen of Peace’s Literary Magazine)
or in PTC. By looking at the
first Coffee House event, it is easy
to see that everyone felt welcome.
Out of the 25 people who attended
the event, there were current
Queen of Peace and St. Laurence
students, alumni, members of the
faculty and their family, along with
a few parents.
Many of those who came, just
listened while other individuals
decided to perform. From people
playing the piano, to a man
playing his accordion, many
people participated in the event.
Individuals were singing original
songs, a person picked up
their iPod and performed, short
stories and poems were read,
skits and pieces of movies were
acted out…there was a huge
amount of talent being shown.
Even Ms. Vorderer decided to
pitch in on stage singing a few
lines from Janis Joplin’s Mercedes
Benz. Ms. Kancler stated
that the event was a “nice mix
of things” and that she thought
“it went very well”. The next
coffee house is planned to be
in November but there is no set
date as of yet.
