"Taicang Port has constructed 32 berths, and opened up to 64 domestic & International shipping lines, specializing in near-ocean foreign trade container transportation. In 2007, the handling capacity of Taicang port exceeded 1 million TEU, while its throughput exceeded 30 million tons," said Castonguay. Taicang Port Bonded Logistics Center and Joint Inspection & Service Building are 1 km to the container berths. The Bonded Logistics Center has all necessary functions. One-stop services of the Joint Inspection & Service Building provide enterprises with fast customs clearance services. TIG is the first port to be fully equipped with electrical RTG yard cranes, running off the electrical power grid and thus reducing carbon emissions by eliminating the use of diesel. Modern Terminals manage and operate Taicang port phases 1 and 2, with a 70% shareholding and 30% for the Suzhou Government. Phase 1 consists of two container berths and two breakbulk berths, a draft of -12.5m and 930m quay length. There is a 129 hectares yard area with 12,000sqm of warehousing space. Phase 1 is equipped with 4 QC and 10 RTG, and has a capacity of 600,000 TEU. Phase 2 has four container berths, 1,100m quay length with the same -12.5m draft, 141 hectares of yard space and 13 QC plus 39 RTG, with a total capacity of over 3 million TEU. There are no foreign investors as of yet in Phase 3 and Modern Terminals indicated that it is in negotiations with the Suzhou Government. "With the migration of light industrial manufacturing out of Shanghai with the land becoming more expensive and more congested, there was migration to Taicang which is within 50 to 100 km radius of the manufacturing region in south Jiangsu," said Weaser. "We saw the development of the Taicang port as a natural evolution in line with the region's development. Taicang port offers direct services to markets in the US and intra-Asia." Weaser said the decision to invest in Taicang included offering customers better services outside of Shanghai where congestion and high costs were driving industry out; Taicang has the full support of the Suzhou government in developing the port and the supporting infrastructure; Modern Terminals can offer its customers an additional choice that is closer to the source and outlets of manufacturing. "We listen to everyone in the supply chain," said Weaser. "To the shipping lines and to the people that own the goods. We see in Taicang a capacity to develop continuously in coming years to accommodate the rapid growth and expansion in the region."
