Opening Prayer
Presence of God
In the silence of my innermost being,
in the fragments of my yearned-for
wholeness,
can I hear the whispers of God's presence?
Can I remember when I felt God's nearness?
When we walked together and I let myself be
embraced by God's love.
Opening Prayer
Freedom
God is not foreign to my freedom.
Instead the Spirit breathes life into my most
intimate desires,
gently nudging me towards all that is good.
I ask for the grace to let myself be enfolded
by the Spirit.
Opening Prayer
Consciousness
Knowing that God loves me unconditionally,
I can afford to be honest about how I am.
How has the last day been, and how do I feel
now?
I share my feelings openly with the Lord.
Opening Prayer
The Word
God speaks to each one of us individually.
We ask the Holy Spirit to be with us to help us
be open to God’s Word.
As you listen, reflect on a word or phrase that
speaks to you at this moment.
Opening Prayer
SCRIPTURE: Luke 24:13-35
The Road to Emmaus: When we journey
as pilgrims, we see things more clearly and
can feel the movement of God in our lives.
Opening Prayer
What are you saying to me,
Lord?
Rembrandt's Supper at Emmaus
Opening Prayer
Where do you recognise Jesus
in your life?
An Australian Prayer for
World Youth Day 2011
God of hope and grace,
send your Holy Spirit upon us
as our helper and guide.
As we prepare for World Youth Day in Madrid,
help us to build upon the many
graces and experiences
that were the fruit of
World Youth Day in Sydney.
Send forth the power of the Spirit upon us
so that we may continue to be your witnesses
in service and love to other youth in Australia.
May we journey together in the great south
land of the Holy Spirit
and share in this pilgrimage of faith
to the ends of the earth.
Pour your grace into our lives
so that we may be
apostles of reconciliation
and builders for the new creation.
Nourish and unite us through the Eucharist,
so that firm in the faith we may be planted
and built up in Jesus Christ.
We ask this through the intercession of Our
Lady of the Southern Cross
and in the healing name of our Lord Jesus,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit
one God forever and ever.
Amen.
Mary, Help of Christians. Pray for us.
Saint Mary MacKillop. Pray for us.
Spiritual Formation
More than a tourist …
Spiritual Formation
What is a Pilgrimage?
Spiritual Formation
Pilgrimage is an ancient practice which is
a part of the tradition of all great faiths.
The tradition of pilgrimage, ancient and
new, invites us as Catholics to set aside
sacred time, to stand apart from the
busyness of our daily lives and reflect on
the great treasure that we have in the
person of Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Formation
Pilgrimmage involves:
• Taking a journey of discovery
• Encountering the sacred
• Living a simple lifestyle
• Sharing with others en route
• Gaining a new perspective
Spiritual Formation
Do you have your own significant place
where you have found a closer
connection to God?
Spiritual Formation
Pilgrim spirituality teaches us that the
meaning of life is not found at the end
of the journey, but in the very journey
itself.
Spiritual Formation
At the end of a WYD pilgrimage, the biggest
items taken home are graces and memories.
These memories and graces have breathed
new life into our faith communities and the
Church.
How exciting to be on the verge of also
being able to experience and collect your
own memories and graces!!!

Travel Tips
Stuff to start thinking about
Health
Visit your doctor to ask about any vaccinations /
boosters you may need for your travels. Anyone
taking prescription medication will need a letter
from their doctor stating what the medication is
and that it is for personal use only.
Keep medication in its original packaging so it is
clearly labelled with your name and the dosage
to avoid customs problems.
All pilgrims need to be self-medicating while on
pilgrimage, if you are unable to do this, please let
the leadership team know.
Health
Carry your own small first aid kit. If you are carrying
any headache tablets, please check that they do
not contain codeine (e.g. panadeine), as it is illegal
in some of the countries we will be visiting. Make
sure you have something for diarrhoea and other
stomach upsets just in case.
Prepare Physically. Take the time now to start
walking once or twice a week, and gradually work
up to walking everyday for the two or three weeks
before we leave. Use this time to walk in your
hiking shoes, as sore feet while your away will
hinder the experience. With proper physical
preparation you will have less chance of becoming
sick or too tired during the week of WYD.
Health
Negotiating Air Travel. When in the air take the
time every hour to walk around and stretch you
legs. This helps you sleep when needed and
limits jet lag on arrival. Loosen shoes and laces
to promote good blood flow through your legs to
prevent swollen ankles and other issues such as
Deep Vein Thrombosis.
Health care begins with the pilgrim. If you have
medical requirements, the primary responsibility
lies with you.
Communication
Organise your mobile phone. Speak with your mobile
phone provider about using international roaming
on your phone including the costs for use. Be sure
to turn data roaming off (unless of course you can
afford the bill!)
Travel Tips
Organise Travel Insurance. This can be done through
Harvest or independently. It is very important that
you have appropriate Travel Insurance!
Call your bank. Let them know that you will be
travelling overseas and may be using your
ATM/Credit Card. Also find out if your cards work in
other countries and any fees that may apply.
Organise a variety of ways to access your money
overseas.
Make sure you have a PIN. Many European
merchants require you to use a PIN rather than
sign when you use your credit card. Get a PIN now
just to be on the safe side.
Travel Tips
Make copies of important travel documents. Make
two photocopies of your passport, travel insurance
details, itinerary and ATM/Credit Cards. Keep one
and leave a copy with a trusted friend or family
member. Also scan a copy of these documents and
email it to yourself so that you can access them
When overseas, your passport is your identity. To
avoid losing all of your ID at once, keep your credit
cards, traveller's cheques and passport separate
but safe.
Travel Tips
Be a smart traveller. Our pilgrimage groups will be
registered with the Department of Foreign Affairs
and Trade (DFAT) in case of an emergency. Anyone
who is travelling outside the standard pilgrimage
arrangements is strongly encouraged to visit
smartraveller.gov.au to register their travel
separately.

Practical Pilgrim Packlist
• At the next Formation Day we will look
specifically at Packlists and pilgrim safety while
overseas
• Here are some suggestions if you are looking
at purchasing luggage for your overseas travel
- Don‟t buy anything you can‟t carry on your
own
- Be aware of the differences between
backpacks and suitcases and travel
backpacks vs hiking backpacks
- Are you buying something for the longterm?
Consider good quality zips / harness
/ padding / wheels / stitching

Packing Lists
Clothing – Holy Land
• Generally people need to make sure their shoulders
are covered and their legs are covered down to the
knees.
• Please bring the following to wear at sacred sites:
Men - pants (not shorts), tops with sleeves (T-shirt)
Women - pants or a skirt at least mid-calf length,
tops with sleeves to cover bare arms (or use a scarf
or light jacket).
As it will be very hot, both men and women may
consider taking “zip-off” pants so they do not need
to wear full-length pants all day.

the harder the journey will be.
• Ensure that you pack appropriate clothing both for
the heat of the day and for the respect of church
request that a copy of this document be forwarded
carefully check their visa requirements with the
embassies or consulates of each country visited
on their group itinerary. While this remains the
responsibility of the passenger, please contact
Harvest if you require any further information or
assistance in this regard.

Passports & Visas
Important Information
• If you have an entry stamp (past or present) for
Lebanon or Syria in your current passport you
may be refused entry into Israel. We
recommend that you obtain a new passport or
consult Harvest for further advice.
• If travelling to certain Arab countries (e.g. Iran,
Syria and Lebanon) after your stay in the Holy
