It’s not an art mecca, but Phnom Penh has a rising art scene and we are loving it.

You have probably been aching 

to see some art ever since 

you read our feature about 

the youth art scene in issue 

38, and if so you are in luck my buddies 

because we have scoped out the city 

and found the newest exhibitions 

going on around town. Here’s a quick 

review of creative works on display 

around Phnom Penh. We hope you will 

check them out for yourself. 

Like most university students, my 

stress level has been rising recently 

along with the mountain of assignments 

that have been piling up, and 

come the end of last week, I needed 

to do something to get my mind off 

school. I called up my friend and we 

decided to relieve our stress with a 

Saturday afternoon touring a couple 

of our favorite art galleries. 

The first artist we checked out was

would choose such a name, and I 

couldn’t help but satiate my curiosity 

and go to figure it out.

faces of about 15 women, all with 

intense, emotive expressions, immediately 

pulled us in to carefully consider

the place to ourselves. We noticed a 

piece of paper that explained the name 

of the series of paintings and were fascinated 

with what it said. Sra Nge is not 

only smaller and harder than normal 

rice, it is sweeter when cooked, but for 

the sake of productivity, it has been 

removed from Cambodia’s rice fields. 

The metaphor that Sou Sophy conveys 

with her finely crafted portraits, each 

evoking a different emotion, is that 

every woman has unique qualities and 

characteristics that are valuable and 

shouldn’t be thrown away. 

After a while my friend complained 

of a headache brought on by the 

intense consideration the paintings 

inspired. “How did she come up with 

the idea to use rice straw and sugar 

cane as the surface to make portraits 

like these,” was one of the many questions 

left unanswered as we walked 

out of the gallery. While we wanted to 

know more, we knew enough to confidently 

remark that the work we had

and that made us happy. 

Our second stop was Java Café and 

Gallery, where a photo exhibition 

called Remnants of Bokor and Kep, 

by American fine art photographer 

Eric Alan Pritchard, is one week into 

a five week run. We were rather excited, 

given his reputation but, frankly, 

the photographs were hardly worthy 

of such high expectations. The 22 

black and white photographs of abandoned 

homes in Kep and the famous 

Bokor Palace Casino on Bokor Mountain 

just seemed unspectacular, not 

like the work of an award winning artist. 

We agreed that anyone with an 

expensive camera and some training 

could have produced a similar result, 

but we are both passionate about

While we weren’t thrilled with the 

exhibit, we collected some ideas that 

we can incorporate into our own work, 

and it is always exciting to see things 

from another person’s perspective. As 

always on these types of expeditions, 

spending an enjoyable afternoon with 

my friends was the highlight of the 

experience. We parted ways wishing 

that there were more gallery’s to visit, 

but agreed to do it again as soon as we 

heard of an interesting exhibit.

but finding work can 

sometimes seem 

impossible. The everyday 

stresses of the workplace are 

undeniable, but people trying to break 

into the job market would be happy to 

trade the anxiety of unemployment for 

the demands that come with their chosen 

profession. 

Just about everyone has had to look 

for work at some point in their life, and 

it is safe to say that there are few things 

more frustrating than a prolonged job 

search. The best way to make yourself 

an attractive employee is to build up 

your skills through studying, interning 

and volunteering. But without a professional 

network of people in your 

field, your capacity for greatness will 

likely go unnoticed. 

Networking is a term that refers to 

many different types of human-to- 

human interaction. But they all lead to 

the same thing: a greater ability to get 

information and support on the way 

to a more successful career. 

You do not have to be a social butterfly 

or a veteran in your field to build 

a broad network of professional contacts. 

Even if you are years away from 

entering the professional realm, it isn’t 

too early to make mutually beneficial 

personal connections that could last 

until the day you retire. 

Just like building your professional 

skills, networking requires significant 

time and effort. But the challenge of 

becoming well connected in your sector 

shouldn’t be overwhelming. 

To make it more manageable we 

asked career counsellors, industry 

experts and gainfully employed youth 

to offer their guidance on how to make 

your presence known. 

The fact is, explained David Symansky, 

recruitment manager at the 

employment agency HR Inc, that the 

larger your professional network is, the 

more likely you are to succeed. 

Whether you are employed or not, 

the likelihood of being introduced to 

new opportunities inevitably increases 

with the number of people you know. 

Of course just knowing someone’s 

name isn’t enough, he added. 

You need to reach out and let people 

know who you are and what you are 

capable of. Communicating your ideas 

with confidence is the first step toward 

gaining respect from potential employers, 

colleagues and possible future 

employees. 

Networking builds trust, and when 

people are looking through a stack of 

CVs that have been submitted by strangers 

for a job opening, having a familiar 

face and a positive reputation can 

make you stand out among the 

crowd. 

Strong professional contacts also 

make it much easier to get relevant and 

meaningful recommendations, which 

are crucial to employers to get a sense 

of your potential, said Si Len, programme 

manager for youth employment 

for social dialogue for the Cambodian 

Federation of Employers & 

Business Associations. 

“There will be more chances to be 

selected for a job and the process will 

move faster than it will for people without 

[a strong support network.]” 

Activities aimed at professional 

development, such as volunteering, 

community service or capacity building 

courses, are all great opportunities 

to make lasting connections. 

But daily interactions can also lead 

to relationships that carry over into the 

professional realm. 

When it comes to professional networks, 

bigger is always better, and any 

opportunity to meet people could be 

the one that gets you the job you’ve

for meeting new people paid off when 

he got a job working with Sabay’s social 

media team, whose manager knew 

him through volunteer work at the Bar- 

Camp technology conference. 

When forming professional contacts, 

you shouldn’t be selective based on 

your impression of the people you 

meet, said Ana Nov, general manger of 

ANG Khmer Group, because you never 

know what relationships will be 

valuable in the future. 

“We need the trust of others to get 

our job done,” explained the young 

entrepreneur. 

This can be gained “through all 

means of communication, associations 

or any other opportunities”. 

The ability to seize informal opportunities 

to expand your network of 

contacts is invaluable. But as the country’s 

white-collar workforce is expanding 

there, you should also be sure to 

take advantage of events designed to 

bring together people moving the

“It’s fun to get to know a lot of 

people from all over the world,” said 

Seng Pyseth, an internationally connected 

student from the Royal University 

of Law and Economics. 

He has become globally connected 

by capitalising on chances to participate 

in programmes, including the 

Global Undergraduate Exchange Program 

in the United States and Sunburst 

Youth Camp. 

It’s not always easy to break the ice in 

a social setting, and it can be even more 

difficult if you are mixing with older, 

more experienced people, but you have 

nothing to lose by introducing yourself. 

“Go out and try to meet new people 

because practice makes perfect,” said 

Symansky. “The more you network the 

better you will be at it.”

to a report released 

this week, which would 

mark the first year-on-year 

increase since 2005. 

The monthly report, 

released on Tuesday by the 

Cambodian Mine Action 

And Victim Assistance Authority, 

said total casualties 

reached 207 for the period of 

January to August this year, 

compared with just 186 for 

the same period in 2009. Of

letters to learn about what was happening 

in the world and what was going on 

in the lives of their friends and family 

members. It was slow and inefficient, 

but it was all we had. 

The invention of the telephone transformed 

the way we communicate by 

making our connections to other people 

more direct, reliable and immediate. 

But that was only the beginning. 

The development of computer and 

mobile-phone technology has now 

revolutionised not only how we communicate 

with others but how we live 

and work. 

GeoChat, a collaborative tool developed 

by the Google-funded international 

NGO InSTEDD (Innovative Support 

to Emergencies, Diseases and 

Disasters) debuted in the Kingdom in 

2008. The programme helps groups 

stay connected through alerts relayed 

by SMS, email or Twitter feeds. 

GeoChat enables rapid response 

teams in the public health sector to 

improve early detection of, preparedness 

for and response capabilities to 

health or natural disasters. 

Suy Channe, a product manager at 

InSTEDD, explained how the system 

works. If any member of a specified 

group sends a message by a mobile 

phone, Twitter feed or email account 

that has been configured for use with 

GeoChat, the message will be sent to 

all members of the group, she said, adding 

that if the user has also set a specific 

location, the message will appear 

on map that can be viewed from the 

GeoChat website. 

“I expect that in 2011, we’ll expand 

our tasks in the Kingdom and within 

neighbouring countries to help all institutions 

working in the field of health 

and disaster management to benefit 

from this technology.” 

Cambodia’s Ministry of Health has 

been practising with the GeoChat system 

since 2009 with the aim to implement 

the technology on a national 

level to communicate swiftly with provincial 

offices in times of crisis. 

“Dealing with communicative diseases 

requires the quick exchange of 

information. It is beneficial and important 

for the ministry and for the people 

of Cambodia,” said Sok Touch, director 

of the Communicable Disease Control 

Department at the Ministry of Health.

technologies focus on making people’s 

lives easier by simplifying daily tasks. 

Companies such as the ANZ-owned 

WING have harnessed technology to 

make it easier for people to transfer 

money via text message without the 

hassle of waiting in line at a bank. 

Launched in 2009, the WING mobile 

money transfer service has made it 

much more convenient for subscribers, 

particularly in rural provinces, to send 

money safely and cheaply. 

Peng Liya, a marketing executive at 

WING, said the service has given people 

a safer alternative to sending money 

to the provinces via minibus or taxi 

driver. After receiving a text message, a 

subscriber can go to any of 500 WING 

agents across the country, including 

mobile-phone shops, grocery stores, 

micro-finance institutions and others 

to receive transferred money. 

“In the past, garment workers have 

worried that their money would be sto- 

len from their rooms, but WING can 

assist them in sending the money safely 

to their parents in the provinces. And 

it allows parents to send money safely 

to their children who might be studying 

in Phnom Penh.” 

As of September, WING had partnered 

with two-thirds of mobile phone 

service providers, excluding Mobitel, 

Beeline and Excel, and attracted more 

than 150,000 users. 

WING also provides a bill pay service 

that allows residents of Phnom Penh 

and Kandal provinces to pay their electricity 

bills by text message. Users can 

also top up their phone anywhere and 

any time, Peng Liya said. 

Mobile banking is growing in popularity 

throughout Southeast Asia. In the 

Philippines, about 8 percent of the 

country’s unbanked population have 

subscribed to some form of mobile 

banking, according to a McKinsey 

report in February. 

“Today, only about 45 million people

without traditional bank accounts use 

mobile money, but we expect this 

number could rise to 360 million by 

2012 if mobile operators were to 

achieve the adoption rates of some 

early movers,” the report said. 

Mobile-phone technology has also 

had a big influence on the way people 

do business in Cambodia. 

The Electronic Market Communication 

System uses text messages to help 

business people and farmers stay up to 

date on market information, including 

prices of agricultural goods, exchange 

rates and market demand for specific 

goods. 

“In business, we need to have up-todate 

information on the markets. This 

is very important,” said Chan Nora, a 

secretary of state for the Ministry of 

Commerce.

1993. The Kingdom began the millennium 

with more than four out of 

five telephone subscribers using a 

wireless phone, the highest ratio in 

the world. 

Thanks to the completion of the 

Soviet-aided Intersputnik space 

communications station in 1987, 

Cambodia got telecommunications 

links (only to Moscow, Hanoi, Vientiane 

and Paris) for the first time 

since 1975. 

Mobile services were introduced in 

Cambodia in 1992. That year there 

were only a little over 4,000 fixed 

lines for a population of some 9.3 

million. Within a calendar year mobile 

users had already surpassed

calling and more for calls outside of

Sophoan refuse to follow the 

sentiment expressed in the 

idiom; she puts on the 

proverbial folded clothes 

every weekend, heads to the 

rugby pitch and proceeds to 

race up and down the field, 

dive on the ground, sweat 

and ruin both her opponents 

and her uniform. Peou 

Sophoan might not be 

typical, and she certainly isn’t 

traditional, but she is a proud 

Cambodian woman who has 

even gone on TV to sing the 

praise of her chosen sport 

and scoff at the notion that 

it’s an inappropriate activity 

for females. 

Peou Sophoan said that 

her initial interest in the 

sport was sparked while 

watching the boys play. But 

as soon as her school formed 

a female rugby team in 2005,

Peou Sophoan and her 

barrier-breaking squad have 

represented the Kingdom at 

competitions in Thailand 

and Laos for the Southeast 

Asia Games, where they 

failed to win the tournament, 

but nonetheless returned 

with their heads held high. 

“I never stopped playing 

hard,” she said. “I learned a 

lot from the experience of 

playing abroad. We have only 

been training for a few years. 

We can’t expect to beat teams 

that have been together for 

over a decade.”

But Peou Sophoan admits 

that it wasn’t easy to get used 

to the physical toll she pays 

to the game. “I like playing, 

but it takes a lot of energy,” 

she said. But after practising 

three hours a day for the 

majority of the last five years, 

she is no longer phased by 

physical strain. 

“Peou Sophoan is a woman 

who is naturally a leader and 

she has the heart of a 

competitor,” said her coach, 

New Zealander Andrew 

Newman. “Whenever she 

talks, every member of the 

team listens to her before 

any of the other women.” 

Peou Sophoan said, 

however, that she was 

disappointed with the lack of 

interest in rugby among her 

sisters in Cambodia. “I 

encourage and welcome any 

girl who wants to join us,” 

she said. “They will be 

unable to refuse the 

opportunity to join when we 

start to enter more 

international competitions.”

The pride I felt six years ago when I was awarded the 

prestigious nationwide ASEAN Scholarship to pursue 

my high school education in Singapore is forever 

imprinted on my mind. As a 15 year-old, I had the 

opportunity to study at one of the world’s most wellestablished 

centres for education and, as I expected then, my 

life was changed forever. 

Regardless of age or background, adapting to a new place is 

a mammoth challenge for students studying abroad. As a 

high school student coming from Cambodia, I not only had 

to excel in my studies, which were significantly harder than 

what I was used to, but also engage in extra-curricular 

activities ranging from sports to community service projects. 

Despite facing such a rigorous daily schedule, I considered 

myself blessed to face adversity that I knew would help me 

move closer to reaching my potential. I learned to be more 

independent, work under pressure, open my mind to new 

ideas and learn from my mistakes and move forward. 

Being away from home taught me another valuable lesson: 

the importance of being humble. I saw smart and arrogant 

students treated badly in class while smarter students who 

remained humble were well liked by their peers. My 

interpersonal skills developed greatly over the past few years, 

thanks in large part to the lessons I learned from my 

classmates. I remember being rather shy and introverted 

when I was in Cambodia, but I was thrown into a situation 

where I could either isolate myself or learn to engage with the 

people around me. I knocked down my communication 

barriers to become an outspoken person who could easily 

integrate into any society. 

Studying abroad will change a person, and it is best to 

embrace these changes as they will often be useful down the 

road. You will need a high IQ and a high EQ to be successful in 

a global job market. 

Six years after I first came to Singapore I am still here, 

majoring in civil engineering with a minor in business 

management at the National University of Singapore. Being 

accepted into such a prestigious university was a huge 

honour for me and my family. But I have never forgotten my 

background and I will come back and use my knowledge to 

contribute to our country in any way I can. It is essential to 

give back to the society that raised us. 

There are many scholarships available to motivated 

students in the Kingdom. While I strongly recommend a 

Singaporean education, studying in any developed country 

will benefit students who dare to step out of their comfort 

zone and make a difference. 

I want to leave you with two short thoughts that, if 

internalised, can make a world of difference. The first – “If you 

fail to plan, you will plan to fail” – conveys the importance of 

setting goals and developing a plan to reach them. 

The second bit of wisdom draws on research on the physics 

of the bumblebee. Its body is too heavy and its wingspan too 

small for it to fly, but the bumblebee stays aloft. In the same 

way, when you ignore your limitations you are likely to go out 

and surprise yourself. The only limitations holding you back 

are those that are self-imposed. Be like a bumblebee and fly 

for your future, fellow Cambodians!

prostitution, often the wrong party 

is being looked at. 

This is in response to an article 

published in Lift Magazine on October 

13 that showed some schoolgirls 

working as prostitutes to get money 

while studying. Four high school and 

university girls became prostitutes and 

reportedly earned a lot of money. 

The reasons they gave were that 

their boyfriends cheated on them and 

they were introduced by their friends 

who had more experience. Their 

friends arranged time for them to have 

sex with rich old men to get a higher 

price. In the article, there is also much 

comment from Nom Bophary, the 

director of Women and Education at

everyone’s right, in this case it is against 

new laws that crack down on human

And article 24 states with regard to 

punishment for prostitution that:

term from 1 day to 6 days and a fine of 

between 3000 riel and 10000 riel. 

According to the two articles stated 

above, men who are involved in 

buying sex services should be 

punished and fined. 

But recently police have only been 

cracking down and arresting girls and 

women selling sex, not the men who 

buy their services.

What is your position on the nature vs. nurture debate?

Through on my study The debate which I will be delving into 

in this is known by a variety of names, but be it referred to 

as ‘nature versus nurture’ or ‘blood versus environment’ the 

players on both sides remain the same. Those who believe 

that human nature is determined by genetics and therefore 

cannot be changed are usually among the reactionary elite. 

They tend to be overt racists or a t least predisposed to stereotypes 

of ethnic groups or classes. They vehemently dispute 

the opposing view that can be used to threaten their privileged 

position in society. Proponents of the view that most human 

characteristics are products of the environment in which they 

are raised are usually on the left side of the political spectrum 

and criticize present social conditions. Experimentation, the 

best manner with which to gather evidence, is frowned upon 

when humans are involved so both sides of the argument are 

difficult to prove decisively. However, I support the view that 

humans are the result of the environment in which they are 

nurtured, especially in the early formative years of their childhood, 

and I believe that my opinion is better supported with 

compelling evidence than the opposing view. :D
