The first thing Jeff Langstraat, a new
Sociology professor at CCAC, said was,
“Call me Jeff or Professor Langstraat,
NEVER Jeffrey; only my mother calls
me that!” He comes here directly from
the University of North Dakota.
Jeff was born on September 15, 1968
in Orange City, Iowa. He received a
degree in music from Iowa State University.
He then pursued his bachelor’s
degree at Minnesota State and his Ph.D.
at Boston College in Massachusetts.
Jeff began his teaching career at Iowa
State and has taught at five universities
in Massachusetts, two in Minnesota,
and a couple in Wisconsin and North
Dakota. When asked what he likes best
about teaching he replies, “I really enjoy
interacting with my students. I love seeing
that moment when the ‘light bulb’
goes on and I can tell a student ‘gets’ it.”
Jeff has an incredible love of cooking.
He often makes us hungry discussing all
the dishes he cooked the night before!
He also loves to garden. “There is nothing
like eating things straight from the
dirt,” he stated enthusiastically. He is
thinking about starting a sustainability
club teaching gardening, cooking and
recycling tips. If you are interested in
joining the club, please email him at
jlangstraat@ccac.edu.
I asked Professor Langstraat, “What
makes a successful college student?”
Without hesitation he replied, “Getting
involved. Get involved. Students who
get involved have a higher percentage
of graduating.”
Honor students “think
Pink” during october
October is National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, a time to focus our
collective energy and stand in support
of those battling this disease. It is likely
that we all know and love someone
affected by breast cancer a mother, a
mentor, aunt, or a friend, yourself or
your sister, your grandmother or your
daughter. One out of eight U.S. women
will be diagnosed with this disease in her
lifetime. That’s an estimated 226,870
cases per year in the U.S. alone, and an
estimated 39,000 women will die as a
result of the disease this year. But the
good news is that breast cancer CAN
be conquered; approximately women
are beating this disease every day, 2.9
million of the largest demographic of
cancer survivors in the country. Though
science still hasn’t pinpointed exactly
what causes breast cancer, education
and early detection can vastly increase
the likelihood of surviving the disease.
CCAC students are excited to once
again lend support to the fight against
breast cancer. Since 2007, CCAC Honors
Program students from all campuses
have been participating in a friendly
competition with students from Point
Park and Robert Morris to raise money
for the Pittsburgh chapter of the Susan
G. Komen Foundation. CCAC’s Honors
program is extremely proud of the fact
that it has been the top fundraiser every
year of the competition, having raised
over $9,500 since 2007. Collectively,
students from CCAC, Point Park, and
Robert Morris have raised over $15,000
to fund breast cancer screening, education,
and treatment programs in our
area. The Komen Foundation, in turn,
has contributed over $2 billion to breast
cancer research and life-saving community
programs.
During the whole month of October,
CCAC students will be actively
fundraising in the Pink Feet Race for
the Cure. Information tables will be set
up on all campuses during the week of
October 10-17. Please stop by to get
information on how you can help beat
this disease and remember to buy some
“Pink Feet,” knowing that your dollars
are contributing to a cure. Your support
is essential, appreciated and effective.
Please lend your time, effort and
financial support to this cause that is so
important to women worldwide.
Students have set up a Facebook
page for Race For the Cure. Please
friend them at www.facebook.com/
