These committees are involved in activities ranging from promotion, research and education, performance testing and long range planning to shows and exhibits, membership, fiscal matters and junior activities. Refer to the SGBI Association Information page in Santa Gertrudis USA for a list of vice-presidents, their phone numbers and email addresses in order to volunteer your services. You may choose to become involved through participation as a board member. SGBI is always looking for leadership as a percentage of the directors are up for reelection after their first three year term and are replaced following completion of their second consecutive three year terms. Work with your affiliate or simply call the office to determine if a seat is up for re-election or to be vacated in fiscal 2012 then indicate you would like to serve the association by running for the board. Please make plans to attend the Santa Gertrudis Foundation Legacy Reception Saturday January 14th in Ft. Worth, Texas at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. SGBI kicks off its campaign to raise $1,000,000 for the Santa Gertrudis Foundation from which the association will fund breed research and education opportunities. Additionally, earlier Saturday is the Premier Affiliate’s Cowtown Elite Sale and Sunday January 15th is the National Open Show. Both events will be held at the Ft. Worth Stock Show & Rodeo facilities. Please see announcements in this and the December issues of Santa Gertrudis USA for details on all these important events. Ramblings from the Open Range ExECUTIvE DIRECTOR’S REpORT John Ford 361.592.9357 jford@santagertrudis.com Thinking back over the years, I don’t recall ever making a New Year’s resolution. Probably because I realize that the chance for success would be minimal at best. Don’t get me wrong, there are things that need changing in my life. For example, my fondness for fried foods can’t be healthy, but I have no intention of skipping French fries with a chicken fried steak. Recently I found that I have a real affection for deep fried candy bars found in concession stands at a number of state fairs around the nation. Resolving to limit my intake of fried, artery-clogging delicacies would be a good resolution. But it won’t happen, because I know that I will order French fries with a chicken fried steak within the first 48 hours of the New Year. I operate under the assumption that a resolution can’t be broken if it is not made. I understand however, that to continue to grow and be successful in a changing beef industry, SGBI must make some New Year’s resolutions and be committed to them. As seedstock producers we must resolve to strengthen our efforts in collecting and submitting performance data. Survey results indicated that our membership understands the need for performance data and recognizes the significance placed on EPDs by the commercial sector. The survey was very clear that SGBI members want steps to be taken that will remove barriers impacting participation in TPR. With that in mind, the Board of Directors recently implemented a TPR fee change designed to remove the cost barrier associated with data collection and submission. Barriers related to excessive paperwork and lack of education concerning TPR are being examined as well. I have no doubt that resolving to strengthen our TPR efforts will pay dividends for our breed.
